#2 St. Cloud State charts 2-2 tie vs. #5 North Dakota

In a classic battle between two college hockey heavyweights, the #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-2-1, 6-2-1 NCHC) skated to a 2-2 tie against #5 North Dakota (10-4-5, 5-2-2 NCHC) on Friday, Dec. 8 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. UND went on to gain the game's extra league point after scoring in the shootout session after both squads skated to a scoreless draw regulation OT session and the 3x3 OT session.

The game's first period set the tempo as both teams played to a scoreless draw as the Fighting Hawks outshot the Huskies 12-10.
The first goal of the game was then registered at 11:31 of the second period with an even-strength marker by Easton Brodzinski. He was assisted on the play by Patrick Newell and Kevin Fitzgerald. This was Brodzinski's fifth goal of the season, while it marked Newell's seventh assist and Fitzgerald's sixth assist of the year.
UND replied at 15:16 of the second period with a tally by Rhett Gardner that included assists from Christian Wolani and Colton Poolman. Â
In the third period, SCSU's Ryan Poehling took full advantage of a UND turnover at center ice and converted on an unassisted breakaway that pushed the score to 2-1 in favor of the Huskies. This was Poehling's fifth goal of the season and his 16 point of 2017-18.
To end the game's scoring in regulation, UND's Cole Smith tied it at 2-2 with his marker at 9:14 of the third. Johnny Simonson and Wolanin both scored assists on the play for UND.
In the first OT session, UND tested SCSU goalie Jeff Smith as it outshot the Huskies 5-1. Neither team was able to convert thus forcing the 3x3 OT session that also proved to be a scoreless affair. Of note, SCSU outshot UND 6-2 in the 3x3 OT session. In the shootout, SCSU's Jake Wahlin missed the first attempt before Wolanin converted on his attempt to end the game.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Fighting Hawks 33-32. Smith made 30 saves in the game and Cam Johnson had 31 saves for UND. On the power play, SCSU was 0-6 but the Huskies were perfect on the penalty kill at 2-2. Brodzinski had seventh shots on goal in the game and Schuldt had six shots on goal in the game for SCSU.
