Second Half Surge Pulls Huskies Up 82-74 at Mary
2/10/2017 8:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Bismark, N.D.- The St. Cloud State women's basketball team overcame an 11 point deficit at halftime to take a key NSIC match up against the University of Mary on Feb. 10.
The Huskies (10-13, 8-11 NSIC) were outscored in both the first quarter (13-20) and the second quarter (16-20) to fall behind the Marauders (12-15, 7-12 NSIC) 29-40 heading into halftime.
However, some special second period magic would go down on the hardwoods of the McDowell Activity Center as the Huskies came out of halftime inspired. The Huskies would put up 30 points in the third quarter, doubling their score and pulling within two points of the home team at 59-61.
The fourth quarter would prove to be the turning period for the Huskies, as their third quarter dominance would carry over. The Huskies would take over the lead just 90 seconds into the frame off a jumper from Amanda Christianson, and not look back the remainder of the game. The Huskies would roll onto a strong victory at 82-74.
The Huskies were not only able to grab the victory but dominate the Marauders in two key offensive categories outscoring U-Mary 12-2 in second chance points and 21-4 in points off turnovers. The Huskies also were able to perform a complete 180 on their shooting percentages moving from 25 percent (3-12) from beyond the arch to making 55 percent (5-9) of their shots from beyond in the second half.
The Huskies were led in the win by senior Betsy MacDonald who was the only Huskies to score over 20 with 21 points on the night. Fellow senior Chelsea Nooker added 17, Christianson had 14, and Andrea Thomas rounded out the double digits with 13 points. Thomas also dished out the most assists for the Huskies with five on the night, while freshman Brianna Johnson grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team in that category.
St. Cloud State will return to action Feb. 11 when they travel to face the Beavers of Minot State University at 4 p.m. The Huskies will return to home court next weekend when they play host to Minnesota State, Moorhead and Northern State University on Feb. 17-18 to close out regular season action.
