St. Cloud State suffers 2-1 setback to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth

Huskies fall short in season’s penultimate game and slip to sixth place in the WCHA
DULUTH—Another standout performance by freshman goaltender Janine Alder kept the St. Cloud State women's team (9-20-4, 7-17-3-2 WCHA) close, but a late third period rally came up short in a 2-1 loss to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth (21-5-5, 18-5-4-1) on Friday.
With SCSU trailing, 2-0, late in the third period freshman forward Janna Haeg capitalized on a rebound with 26 seconds left to draw the Huskies within one, but their comeback hopes ended there.
"We competed very hard and played well, defensively," Rud said. "They just made one more play than we did. We have to try to find a way to score one more goal in a game like that."
The goal was Haeg's second in her last three games and extended her point streak to three games. The marker came on what head coach Eric Rud called a "simple play"—getting a shot, generating a rebound and putting in the back of the net—something he said SCSU needed more of in a tight game.
"Sometimes, when you're not scoring, you complicate things and make the game harder than it needs to be," Rud said. "But when you're trying to score in a game like that, the simpler you play the better."
Alder's play put her team in a position to mount its rally, turning away 38 UMD shots. It was the Zurich, Switzerland native's fifth-straight 30-plus save performance and the 14th of her rookie campaign.
"She has given us chances to win all year and she did again tonight," Rud said.
After the Bulldogs struck first just over four minutes into the contest Alder kept the game within one, 1-0, through the first 40 minutes against a wave of 34 UMD shots. But a breakdown in front of the net on the penalty kill 6:40 into the final frame pushed the deficit to two. Despite out-shooting Minnesota Duluth, 13-6, in the third, that proved to be too deep a hole for the Huskies to climb out of.
"We were happy with the last 40 minutes of hockey. We just needed one more goal," Rud said. "The margin of error in this league is so tight and one little mistake came back to haunt us."
The defeat, combined with Ohio State's 4-2 win at North Dakota, dropped the Huskies to sixth place in the WCHA standings with one regular season game to play. SCSU is now two points back of the fifth place Buckeyes and just one point ahead of seventh place Bemidji State after it defeated Minnesota State, 6-1.
St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth wrap up their two-game set, and the 2016-17 regular season, on Saturday, February 18. Game time is 4:07 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. Huskies fans can watch the game on NCHC.tv.
