St. Cloud State men's hockey collects 3-1 win at #12/13 UND

Grand Forks, N.D. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-13-1, 7-9-1 NCHC) scored a 3-1 victory at #12/13 University of North Dakota (14-11-3, 7-9-1 NCHC) before 11,682 fans at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. on Friday, Feb. 3.
The victory was SCSU's fourth consecutive win on a Friday night this season and it sets up the second game of the series against UND on Saturday, Feb. 4. Game time at the Ralph Engelstad Arena is set for 7:07 p.m.
Fans back in St. Cloud can watch the game on Fox College Sports and on the SCSU Sports Network (Charter Channel 823/426) and Comcast Channel 999 out of the Twin Cities. SCSU fans can listen to the game live on REV 96.7 FM or KVSC FM 88.1.
The Huskies broke into the scoring column on Feb. 3 with a first period marker by Jacob Benson, who scored the even strength goal at 11:25. The solo assist on the play was set up by Jake Wahlin. A native of Grand Forks, N.D., Benson was playing his first game with the Huskies back in his hometown. This was his eighth goal of the season and it was Wahlin's fourth assist of the year.
In the second period, SCSU extended its lead to 2-0 with the game winner scored by Jimmy Schuldt at 6:05. Robby Jackson and Patirck Newell each had assists on the play, which was Schuldt's fourth goal of the season.
The Fighting Hawks broke the shutout at 8:16 of the third period with a power play goal by Tucker Poolman. Chris Wilkie and Rhett Gardner each had assists on the play that made it 2-1.
Less than 30 seconds later, SCSU ended the rally with a goal by Ryan Poehling at 8:44 that made the final score 3-1. Poehling deflected a shot on net by Jackson, which beat UND netminder Matt Hrynkiw. Newell issued the second assist on the play, which was Poehling's sixth goal of the season. Jackson now has eight assists this year, while Newell paces the team with 18 assists in 2016-17.
UND outshot the Huskies 29-19 in the game, which equals SCSU's lowest shot total this season. The Huskies also had 19 shots on Nov. 11 at Colorado College in a game they won 7-3.
Jeff Smith gained his seventh win of the year with 28 saves between the pipes for SCSU. Hrynkiw was the goalie of record for UND with 16 saves to his credit. On the power play, UND was 1-3 and SCSU was 0-2.
