Volleyball Stays Perfect in California With Three Game Victories Over Saint Martin’s and Cal State San Marcos on First Day of 2017 Cougar Classic

San Marcos, Calif. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (3-0) went 2-0 on the first day of the 2017 Cougar Classic on Friday, Sept. 1, at The Sports Center in San Marcos, Calif. to stay perfect on the young season. The program won in straight sets over Saint Martin's by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 26-24 in the afternoon match. The team kept living well in California with another three-set victory over the host school Cal State San Marcos in the evening match by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 26-24.
The program was led in the win over St. Martin's by senor Becca Gruber's 13 kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Senior Nicole Miller totaled nine kills and 14 digs. She added four service aces. Junior Krista Kuglin recorded 11 kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Senior Kayla Crane led the team with her 22 assists. Freshman Maddy Torve totaled 18 assists. Sophomore Clara Krenz picked up a team-best 15 digs. SCSU hit .192 in the match with 48 kills, 45 assists and 51 digs. St. Cloud State also recorded nine service aces in the three-game set.
SCSU defeated Cal State San Marcos behind Gruber's 13 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Crane again led the team with her 22 assists plus recorded two service aces. Junior Micah Nier totaled eight kills. Miller sported 13 digs and had a pair of service aces. Krenz was the club leader with her 24 digs. The team recorded 41 kills, a .202 hitting percentage, 38 assists, seven service aces plus 57 digs and 8.5 blocks in the three games.
The team wraps up play in California and stays in San Marcos to participate in the second day of the 2017 Cougar Classic on Sept. 2. SCSU begins play against Adelphi University at 4 p.m. (CT). The program then takes on Fresno Pacific at 6 p.m. (CT) in the final match. Check out the live stats at this link
