Volleyball Sweeps Adelphi and Fresno Pacific On Final Day of 2017 Cougar Classic

San Marcos, Calif. – The St. Cloud State volleyball team (5-0) completed an undefeated road trip to California and finished 2-0 on the second day of the 2017 Cougar Classic on Saturday, Sept. 2, at The Sports Center in San Marcos, Calif. The program has started the season with three-game sweeps in each of the first five matches. The program is 5-0 overall for the first time since 1985 when the program won the first 11 matches to start the campaign. On Saturday, the program defeated Adelphi University (0-3) by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19. The team won the evening match against Fresno Pacific (1-3) in a three-game sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21.
The program was led in the win over Adelphi University by senior Nicole Miller. Miller had a double-double with a team-high 14 kills along with 13 digs. Kayla Crane led the squad in assists with 22. Freshman Maddy Torve tallied 16 helpers. Junior Becca Gruber totaled seven kills. Junior Krista Kuglin accumulated eight kills. Sophomore libero Clara Krenz led the squad with her 17 digs. Freshman Taylor Olstad picked up 13 digs. St. Cloud State hit .227 for the match with 48 kills on 128 attempts. The team picked up 46 assists, 57 digs and five service aces.
SCSU defeated Fresno Pacific by a 3-0 count and were led by Miller's 12 kills. The senior also tallied 10 digs and two blocks while also hitting .410 for the match. Gruber also reached double figures in kills with 11 on her .304 hitting percentage. Junior Micah Nier accumulated seven kills. Junior Krista Kuglin had five kills. Krenz led the squad with her three service aces and 18 digs. Olstad totaled eight digs. Crane set up the offense with 20 assists. She also had six digs and two service aces. Torve helped out with 15 assists. St. Cloud State hit .176 for the three-game match with 41 kills in 120 attempts along with 39 assists, 50 digs and seven service aces.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team next makes the trip to Houghton, Michigan to play in the Keweenew Classic hosted by Michigan Tech from Sept. 8-9. The Huskies take on Wisconsin Parkside at 1:30 p.m. and Michigan Tech at 7:30 p.m. on the opening day.
