COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seven student-athletes representing four teams earned a spot on the 2017-18 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Preseason All-Conference Team, as selected by media, the conference revealed Monday, two days in advance of 2017 NCHC Media Day. A total of 30 ballots were submitted by local media members from each school, as well as select national media. The group of honorees includes St. Cloud State University junior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt.
Defending NCAA national champion and NCHC Penrose Cup champion Denver led the way in voting, nabbing four of the seven spots on the team, including three of four forward spots with the third forward spot resulting in a tie. North Dakota, Miami and St. Cloud State each had one representative on the Preseason All-Conference Team. Two seniors were selected to the team, along with four juniors and one sophomore.
Denver sophomore forward Henrik Borgström led all honorees in voting, earning 28 of 30 possible votes, while Borgström's teammate, junior forward Troy Terry collected 15 votes. Fellow DU junior forward Dylan Gambrell and North Dakota junior forward Shane Gersich tied for the final forward spot with 13 votes each. On the blue line, Miami senior Louie Belpedio was the top vote-getter with 24 votes, while SCSU jSchuldt picked up 14 votes as the other defenseman chosen to the team. Denver senior Tanner Jaillet collected 27 of 30 votes to earn the goaltending nod. Gambrell and Belpedio were also named to last season's NCHC Preseason All-Conference Team.
Schuldt, a sophomore captain last season, notched 12 points in conference play and led the NCHC with 59 blocked shots, while finishing with 19 points in 36 games overall and again pacing the NCHC with 88 blocks. Schuldt earned NCHC Scholar-Athlete honors and is a two-time All-NCHC Academic award winners.
Media members voted for three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender on their ballot with each vote worth one point. The top three vote-getters (and ties) at forward, top two defensemen and highest vote-getting goaltender made up the preseason all-conference team.
