Three different St. Cloud State players score to push win streak to three games
FAYETTE, Iowa—The St. Cloud State soccer team (5-4-0, 3-3-0 NSIC) took full advantage of its corner kick opportunities to lift itself past Upper Iowa, 3-0, and push its winning streak to three games on Friday.
Game-by-game, SCSU is increasingly finding its offensive footing. It tied a season high with three goals, lodged its third-straight multi-goal effort and has gotten its last seven goals from five different players.
That trend continued against the Peacocks as three Huskies found the back of the net—led by junior defender Maria Witte, who scored her first career goal and added an assist late in the match for her first-ever multi-point effort.
The Huskies enjoyed a 10-2 corner kicks advantage and they capitalized, scoring each of their three goals from set pieces. Freshman forward Tatyana Gusakow pounced on a deflected ball in the box to open the scoring in the 41st minute, sophomore midfielder Brooke Bares hooked up with Witte directly from a corner in the 66th minute and Witte's service in the 86th minute found junior forward Maria Kass.
Bares' assist on Witte's marker was her third helper in her last two outings while Kass' goal was her team-leading third and second in the past two games.
SCSU's possession advantage made it a low-stress outing for sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian and the back line. The Huskies out-shot UIU, 14-6, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Christian was forced into only two saves to earn her fourth win and second clean sheet of the season.
St. Cloud State wraps up the third weekend of conference play with a trip to Winona State on Sunday, October 1. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
