Huskies held off the scoreboard for the first time this season
ST. CLOUD—Up against one of the top teams in the country, the St. Cloud State soccer team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) held its own, but No. 4 Central Missouri's (3-0-0, 0-0-0 MIAA) potent attack proved to be too much as the Huskies suffered their first setback of the season, 2-0, in its final non-conference tilt on Friday.
Making her second career start, sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian made four saves to help keep SCSU in it until the final whistle.
The Huskies got out on the right foot, charting the first two shots of the contest, but were unable to force a save out of the UCM goalkeeper until the 44th minute. SCSU's back line did well to keep the Jennies at bay and force them out wide, but they were able to capitalize on the chances afforded to them. UCM opened the scoring in the 15th minute on its first shot on target of the match, striking for a 1-0 lead, which proved to be all they would need.
The goal allowed snapped St. Cloud State's 194:27 shutout streak to start the season.
Central Missouri took advantage of the second half restart to double its advantage, finding the back of the net just over a minute and a half into the final stanza.
The Jennies controlled the ball for the majority of the match and out-shot the Huskies, 13-6, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior midfielder Alexa Starr was arguably SCSU's most dangerous player on the night, notching three shots and one on target.
St. Cloud State returns to action on Tuesday, September 12 at 6 p.m. for its NSIC opener at Minnesota Duluth. The Huskies will return to Husky Stadium on Saturday, September 16 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. to host conference rivals Concordia St. Paul and Minnesota State, respectively. Tickets for home games will be available on game day at the Husky Stadium box office. SCSU students with valid university IDs will receive free admission.
