#3 St. Cloud State men's hockey drops 5-2 decision against #8/9 Minnesota State Mankato

The #3 St. Cloud State men's hockey team (14-5-3, 8-3-1 NCHC) lost a 5-2 decision against #8/9 Minnesota State Mankato (18-7-0, 15-5-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Jan. 20 before a Hockey Day Minnesota crowd of 5,591 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Mavericks gained an early lead in the contest and managed to stay one step ahead of the Huskies throughout the night despite being outshot 30-26 by SCSU.
MSU opened the scoring at 1:33 of the first period with a marker by Connor Mackey. The Mavericks stretched their lead to 2-0 with a power play tally by Zeb Knutson at 13:56 of the first. In the closing minutes of the opening period, SCSU broke the shutout at 18:55 with a goal by Jon Lizotte that included assists from Patrick Newell and Blake Lizotte. This was Jon Lizotte's third goal of the season and it was Newell's 10th assist of the year and Blake Lizotte' 11th helper of the campaign.
In the second period, Jake Jaremko charted the game winner at 6:14 as the Mavericks went up 3-1. The Huskies rallied in the second with a goal by Robby Jackson at 6:39. Ryan Poehling and Easton Brodzinski each had assists on the play. This was Jackson's team leading 10th goal of the season, while Poehling now has 12 assists and Brodzinski has six assists in 2017-18.
Knutson lit the lamp once more at 15:00 of the second period to give the Mavs a 4-2 lead. In the final minute of play, MSU completed the story with an empty net goal by C.J. Suess at 19:43.
In the contest, SCSU was 0-2 on the power play and MSU was 1-2. SCSU only had one penalty called against it, while the Mavs had two penalties in the game.
In the nets, Jeff Smith started the contest and had 10 saves and two goals allowed in the first 26:14 of play. David Hrenak completed the game with 11 saves and one goal allowed in the final 32:04 of play. Connor LaCouvee was the MSU goalie of record with 28 saves.
The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 season with a pair of road games at NCHC rival Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 26-27 at Amsoil Arena. Fans can listen to all the action from the Twin Ports on The River 96.7 FM (www.river967.com).
