#3/5 St. Cloud State Huskies lose 5-1 decision at #9/13 Minnesota Duluth

The #3/5 St. Cloud State Universyt men's hockey team (14-6-3, 8-4-1 NCHC) lost a 5-1 decision to the #9/13 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (14-10-3, 8-7-0 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 26 before a crowd of 6,210 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring quickly when Karson Kuhlman scored his sixth goal of the season at 2:36 of the first with assists to Louie Roehl and Nick Swaney. UMD put two more on the board before the first intermission, scoring at 17:24 and 19:54. Peter Kriger scored his ninth goal of the season and Joey Anderson his sixth. The Huskies were only able to put a season low three shots on net in the opening stanza.
The score remained 3-0 for much of the second period, but with the Bulldogs killing off penalties, UMD scored twice on the short hand to push the lead to 5-0. Parker Mackay scored his eighth goal of the season at 17:24 and Karson Kuhlman continued his night by scoring his second goal of the evening with just five seconds left in the period to seal the game for the Bulldogs.
Ryan Poehling prevented the shut out when he scored an even strength goal at the 10:51 mark of the third period. It was Ryan's seventh goal of the 17-18 campaign. Assists on the goal to Patrick Newell (his 11th) and Robby Jackson (his 15th).
David Hrenak saved 13 shots for the Huskies and his counterpart, UMD goalie Hunter Shepard, had 24 saves.
Despite the loss, SCSU remains in first place in the always rugged NCHC with 25 points. UMD remains in fifth place with 18 points. The Huskies wrap up the two game NCHC series tomorrow evening with the Bulldogs in Duluth at 7:07 pm. You can watch tomorrow night's action on the web at www.nchc.tv/scsu
