The #3/5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-6-3, 9-4-1 NCHC) got back on the winning track by defeating the #9/13 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (14-11-3, 8-8-0 NCHC) 2-1 on Saturday, Jan. 27 before a sellout crowd of 7,149 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.
After a UMD goal from Nick Swaney at the 8:24 mark of the first, the Huskies came back to tie it at the 10:00 mark on a tip in from Jake Wahlin. Blake Winiecki started the sequence by winning the draw and pulling it out to Will Borgen who sent the puck toward the net and Jake pushed it home for the 1-1 tie. It was Wahlin's 4th goal of the season.
The Huskies dominated play in the second period, outshooting the Bulldogs 13-4 and possessed the puck the majority of the middle stanza, but were unable to take the lead.
The Huskies started off the third period where they left off in the second, carrying play for long stretches and it finally paid off when Patrick Newell scored the game winning goal at 14:50. It was Patrick's third goal of the 2017-18 campaign. His centermate Blake Winiecki and Jon Lizotte assisted on the game winner.
The Bulldogs pulled their goalie with 1:18 to play and put on a tremendous flurry by putting seven shots on goalie David Hrenak in the final 78 seconds, but the Huskies defense and Hrenak were able to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard to secure the victory.
With the win, the Huskies maintained their hold on their second place position in the always rugged NCHC. SCSU returns home next weekend to host the Omaha Mavericks at 7:37 pm on Friday and 7:07 pm on Saturday. Remember you can get tickets at 877-SCSUTIX or www.scsutickets.com
