#4 St. Cloud State men's hockey sweep NMU with 5-0 victory on Oct. 20

The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (4-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) earned its second consecutive sweep of the new season with a huge 5-0 shuout win on Homecoming Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center against Northern Michigan University (1-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Oct. 20. in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies opened the weekend with a 4-1 win over NMU on Oct. 19 and rolled to another big win that saw SCSU outshoot the Wildcats 31-10 in the contest.
SCSU senior goalie Jeff Smith earned the Huskies' first shutout of the season with a perfect night that included 10 saves and one assist on a goal by Kevin Fitzgerald in the third period.
The Huskies got the ball rolling in the first period as Patrick Newell continued his four-game scoring streak with his fourth goal of the season at 7:15 with an assist from Luke Jaycox. The goal proved to be the game winner for the night.
At 8:57 of the first period, Jimmy Schuldt added his first goal of the 2018-19 season with a power play marker that was assisted by Ryan Poehling and Robby Jackson.
In the second period, Easton Brodzinski pushed the score to 3-0 with his goal at 16:21. Jackson and Ryan Poehling provided two more assists on the play, which was Brodzinski's second goal of the season.
In the third period, Fitzgerald posted his second goal of the season as Jack Ahcan added the first assist on the play. The second assist went to Smith, which was his first point as a Husky. The assist was Ahcan's team-leading seventh of the season.
To complete the game, Jacob Benson notched a power play goal at 7:51 of the third period to make the final 5-0. SCSU rookies Nick Perbix and Nolan Walker each had assists on the play. Of note, Walker now has three assists and four points in 2018-19.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Wildcats 31-10 and it was two-of-three on the power play. NMU was 0-of-1 on the power play as the Huskies were only called for three penalties in the game. Smith made 10 saves in the game and earned his first shutout since a 4-0 win at Minnesota State, Mankato on Oct. 7, 2017. This was SCSU's first shutout since a 4-0 win at Miami on Feb. 10, 2018, which was won by David Hrenak.
The Huskies will continue their 2018-19 season with an Oct. 25 date at Boston College and an Oct. 27 match at Northeastern. Both games will be played in Boston, Mass. Fans can listen to the Huskies on the road on The River 96.7 FM.
