#2 Huskies sweep Beavers with 7-4 victory on Nov. 17

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-1-0, 4-0-0 NCHC) added another weekend sweep to its 2018-19 resume with a big 7-4 victory over Bemidji State University (5-4-1, 3-1-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The victory helped SCSU claim its sixth consecutive victory and its fifth weekend sweep of the 2018-19 season.
A game that was in sharp contrast to Friday's 2-0 defensive battle against the Beavers, the Huskies equaled a season game-high with their seven goal performance, which saw the Huskies outshoot BSU 32-24.
The Huskies got the ball rolling at 10:34 of the first period with a goal by Jimmy Schuldt. Blake Lizotte and Patrick Newell each had assists on the play. The Beavers replied quick with a goal at 11:25 by Nick Cardelli, which tied the contest at 1-1.
Sophomore forward Kevin Fitzgerald made it 2-1 with his goal at 14:58 of the first period, which was assisted by Jack Poehling. Fitzgerald has now scored goals in three consecutive games for SCSU now.
Newell moved the score to 3-1 with his eighth goal of the season at 15:39 of the first. Easton Brodzinski and Blake Lizotte each had assists on the play. This was Newell's team leading eighth goal of the year and it was also Blake Lizotte's eighth assist (and 11th point) of the year.
The in the second period, SCSU padded its lead to 4-1 with Robby Jackson's third goal of the year at 7:00 of the second. Nolan Walker provided the solo assist on the goal, which was Walker's eighth assist of the year. Jackson and Walker rank second on the team this season (along with Ryan Poehling) with 13 points apiece.
BSU rallied with two consecutive goals at 10:18 of the second period by Adam Brady on the power play and at 10:59 by Alex Ierullo.
SCSU ended the Beavers' run at 16:00 of the second period with the game winning goal by Jon Lizotte. Fitzgerald and Jack Poehling each had assists on the play. This was Jon Lizotte's first goal of the 2018-19 season and his 10th as a Husky.
Fitzgerald earned the game's first star with his second goal of the night at 2:42 of the third. Jake Wahlin and Micah Miller both posted assists on the play, which was Fitzgerald's sixth of the season. The assist was Miller's first collegiate point at SCSU and it was Wahlin's first assist of the year.
To cap the SCSU scoring, Schuldt lit the lamp at 8:28 of the third period with helpers from Newell and Brodzinski. This was Schuldt's fourth goal of the season and it was his 95th career point as a Husky. Newell moved back to the top of SCSU's scoring list this season with his assist. He now has 8g/7a for a team leading 15 points.
BSU's Jay Dickman completed the night's offense with a goal at 9:19 to make the final tally SCSU 7, BSU 4.
In the nets, David Hrenak remained unbeaten this season with a 20 save victory. Hrenak is now 8-0-0 in 2018-19 for the Huskies. Former Husky Zach Driscoll suffered the loss for the Beavers with 14 saves in 27:00 minutes of play. Jack Burgart completed the game for BSU in the nets with 11 saves in the final 33:00 minutes of play.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-3 and the Beavers were 1-of-2.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye week next week after Thanksgiving. SCSU will return to the ice in Oxford, Ohio for a pair of NCHC games at Miami University on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
