11/20/2018 3:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The No. 13/18 St. Cloud State University men's basketball team will certainly enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday in style. While the majority of the population recovers from feasting, the Huskies will travel to San Diego, California to partake in the Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Point Loma University.
St. Cloud State will have a busy schedule over the holiday weekend, as its scheduled to take on Seattle Pacific University at 5:30 p.m. PST on Friday, November 23 before taking on the host Sea Lions at 7:30 p.m. PST on Saturday.
The Huskies look to get back on the winning track after suffering their first loss of the season to Minnesota State last weekend. Despite leading early in the second half, St. Cloud State fell to its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rival 80-77 in overtime on Saturday. Though the loss doesn't hurt the Huskies conference record, the game was a nonconference contest after all, the team's overall record falls to 3-1 heading in to the holiday break.
Fans who are unable to enjoy the warmth of San Diego can follow St. Cloud State's men's basketball team on its trip west in several ways. Live stats and video coverage will be available for both games, as will WJON's live radio broadcast. Score updates can also be found on St. Cloud State men's basketball official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball).
Here are the five things to know before the Huskies take California this weekend:
23.5/10.0 – Senior guard Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) had an impressive week for St. Cloud State November 12-17. The senior averaged a double-double in two games over the week, scoring roughly 23.5 points per game with 10.0 rebounds to boot. In the Huskies 121-81 win over Crown College on November 13, Davis and Adam Heede-Andersen (Copenhagen, Denmark / Stenhus Gymnasium) led the team with 19 points apiece, while Davis added seven rebounds in the process. He was even better against the Mavericks, scoring a season-high 28 points and pulling in 13 rebounds in the loss.
1st – Seattle Pacific and Point Loma are two of the few teams St. Cloud State has never played in program history, meaning Friday and Saturday's meetings will be the first. Historically, the Huskies hold a 51-34 record against teams they've only played once for a winning percentage of .600
13 – Sean Smith (Athens, Ga. / Canarias Basketball Academy) can officially be dubbed the king of the block. The senior broke a 13-year-old program record on Saturday for single-game blocks, tallying eight in the game against Minnesota State, bringing his season total to an impressive 25 blocks. Currently, Smith leads the NSIC and the nation in blocks (25) and blocks per game (6.25) amongst student-athletes who have participated in at least four games.
15 – The Point Loma Sea Lions enter their own tournament with a 3-1 record after a thrilling 75-73 upending of the No. 15 team in the country UC San Diego. The Sea Lions defeated their nationally ranked rival in overtime thanks to double-digit point games from five separate players: Josh Rodriguez, Ziggy Satterthwaite, Daulton Hommes, Preston Beverly and Sterling Somers. Beverly was named the PAC West Defensive Player of the Week for his performances in both games, including a three block, 11 point performance against the Tritons, while Daulton Hommes currently is the team's leading scorer, averaging 28.0 points per game.
2 – The Seattle Pacific Falcons had their season opening games cancelled due to the wildfires in California. The team was scheduled to play in the Chico State Mac Martin Invitational, but the tournament was cancelled due to the Camp Fire that was quickly approaching the campus. Despite having their first two games cancelled, the Falcons are still 2-0 this season with wins over Westminster College and Azusa Pacific.
