Huskies Fall to Minnesota Duluth in Conference Opener

Saturday's loss snaps a seven-game winning streak against the Bulldogs at home.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - In their first Northern Sun action of the 2018-19 campaign, the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 NSIC) fell 53-42 to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 NSIC) on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Halenbeck Hall. 
Despite out-scoring the Bulldogs in the first and fourth quarters, the Huskies were unable to fend off the efforts of Sammy Kozlowski, Brooke Olson and Sarah Grow. Each reached double-figures and combined for 33 of UMD's 53 total points. SCSU opened the contest with a 15-9 lead heading into the second quarter, but UMD out-scored the Huskies 18-4 to take a 27-19 lead into the half. The Huskies found themselves in a 21 point deficit with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter, but were able to scratch back in the fourth by holding UMD to four points and responding with 12 of their own.
As a team, SCSU shot 31.8 percent from the field (14-44), 21.4 percent (3-14) from beyond the arc and 64.7 (11-17) at the free throw line. The Huskies were able to force 13 UMD turnovers while eight different Huskies recorded one steal. Minnesota Duluth out-rebounded SCSU 36-35 and posted eight second chance points compared to the Huskies' five. St. Cloud State won the bench battle 22-19 courtesy of Brehna Evans' team-high of eight points while Katrina Theis also contributed six points and a team-high of two blocks.
St. Cloud State's starters combined for 20 points, 24 rebounds and seven assists in the team's first conference game of the season. Nikki Kilboten tallied a game-high of nine rebounds while Tori Wortz and Madelin Dammann each recorded five.
A notable highlight from Saturday's game was a half court buzzer beater from Mackenzie Uter at the end of the first quarter to give SCSU a six point lead heading into the second quarter.

The Huskies return to action on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8 to take on the U-Mary Marauders and Minot State in a pair of road games in North Dakota.
