Women’s Basketball Seniors Lead Huskies to 70-61 Victory over Minot State

St. Cloud State’s veteran presence holds true to extend winning streak to five in Saturday night’s victory on Senior Night.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Huskies' seniors, Andrea Thomas and Amanda Christianson combined for 28 of SCSU's 70 points to improve St. Cloud State's record to 17-7 overall and 14-6 in NSIC conference play. The Minot State Beavers fell to 14-10 overall, and 11-9 in the NSIC on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Halenbeck Hall.
For the second night in a row, the Huskies controlled the lead for over 30 minutes of the game in a contest that consisted of more than five lead changes. St. Cloud State forced 14 Beaver turnovers in Saturday's win. As a team, the Huskies totaled eight steals and two blocks. Andrea Thomas recorded four steals while Nikki Kilboten blocked two shots.
St. Cloud State earned an early lead in the first quarter by shooting 5-10 (50 percent) from three-point range and outscoring the Beavers, 17-14. Mallie Doucette recorded six points and one rebound in the period.
Following a back-and-forth beginning to the second period, the Huskies regained momentum going into the half from Madelin Dammann's 13 points and two clutch three-point shots midway through the period. The Huskies controlled a fifteen-point lead after Dammann's buzzer-beater jumper at the end of the half.
The Huskies gained their largest lead of the night (21 points) at the beginning of the third period before Diondra Denton recorded seven of her total nine points to bring the Beavers within 11 going into the fourth quarter.
After leading by 12 in the fourth quarter, the Huskies' lead was cut once again, only leading by three with under three minutes to play. Andrea Thomas scored 11 points in the last two minutes of play to seal the 70-61 win for St. Cloud State.
As a team, SCSU shot 22-57 (38.6 percent) from the field, 12-27 (44.4 percent) from three-point range and 14-18 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line. Mallie Doucette, Joceyln Johnson and Nikki Kilboten combined for the Huskies' 11 bench points, which outscored the Beavers', 11-6. St. Cloud State out-rebounded the Beavers, 37-11 and scored nine points off of 11 offensive rebounds.
Minot State was led by Holly Johnson and Kari Clements who combined for 39 of the Beavers' 61 points. As a team, the Beavers shot 22-50 (44 percent) from the field, 6-16 (37.5 percent) and 11-12 (91.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Huskies will look to defend their five-game winning streak next Friday night as they hit the road to close out the regular season against Minnesota State Moorhead at 6 PM, then on Saturday night at 4 PM against the Northern State Wolves.
