Huskies’ Five-Game Winning Streak Ends in Moorhead

Moorhead, MINN. – On the eve of the last day in NSIC regular-season play, the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (17-8, 14-7 NSIC) fell to the NSIC North leading, Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons (22-3, 19-2 NSIC) by a score of 70-54 on Friday, Feb. 16.
After leading in the first quarter of the contest, and outscoring Moorhead 19-16 in the second quarter, St. Cloud State allowed the #3 regionally ranked Dragons a 10-point lead going into the second half of the game. The Huskies trailed for the remainder of the game and at one point, allowed the Dragons to lead 21 points in the fourth quarter. A late scoring surge led by Amanda Christianson's six fourth quarter points brought the margin to 16 at the end of regulation.
Madelin Dammann, Andrea Thomas and Brianna Johnson each scored in double-figures to pace the Huskies' offensive efforts. Tori Wortz and Amanda Christianson each had six rebounds in the game. As a team, St. Cloud State shot 21-57 (36.8 percent) from the field, 4-16 (25 percent) from three-point range, and 8-12 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line. The Huskies totaled 27 rebounds and three steals.
Four of the Dragon's five starters scored 11 points or more, with Drew Sannes recording a double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds). Jacky Volkert had a game-high of 16 points while also bringing in six rebounds and totaling six assists. As a team, Moorhead shot 25-58 (43.1 percent) from the field, 5-17 (29.4 percent) from three-point range, and 15-18 (83.3 percent) from the free-throw line. MSU totaled 45 rebounds and 18 assists on Friday night.
The Huskies will travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota to face off against Northern State on Saturday at 4 PM. The Wolves are 23-4 overall and 18-3 in NSIC play after Friday's 57-44 victory over Minnesota Duluth. NSU is currently on an eight-game winning streak. The Wolves' last loss came on the campus of St. Cloud State when the Huskies upset the #22 nationally ranked Wolves by a score of 61-57 in Halenbeck Hall.
