The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-6-5, 15-4-3 NCHC) claimed the 2018 National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular season championship with a 4-2 victory over #3/4 University of Denver Pioneers (17-8-7, 11-6-5 NCHC) before a crowd of 4,643 on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The win clinched the second NCHC regular season championship for the Huskies and their third conference championship during the team's NCAA Division I era since 1987-88. SCSU won its first Penrose Cup in 2014 and it also won the WCHA regular season championship in 2013, the year before SCSU moved into the NCHC.
The Huskies will complete their regular season schedule on March 2-3 with a pair of road games at NCHC rival North Dakota.
Robby Jackson initiated the scoring this evening when he poked the loose puck in the net at the 14:43 mark while the Huskies were short handed. Judd Peterson got the initial shot on net and Tanner Jaillet nearly got all of it, but it trickled through his legs and Robby beat the DU defenseman to the puck to give the Huskies the lead. Jackson currently leads the team in goals with 15.
After the Pioneers tied it at 1-1 later in the first period, Jacob Benson connected with a goal at the 2:34 mark of the second period with assists from Hobey Baker Candidate Jimmy Schuldt (25) and Jon Lizotte (10). It was Benson's seventh goal of the season.
After Denver tied the score again at 2-2, Ryan Poehling scored on a spectacular break away goal at the 12:25 mark of the third period to push the Huskies ahead once again and it proved to be the game winner. Jimmy Schuldt got his second assist of the evening on Poehling's goal, his ninth of the season.
With Denver's goalie pulled, Jon Lizotte hit the empty net all the way from the Huskies zone at the 19:20 mark of the third period to secure the Huskies' championship. It was Lizotte's fourth goal of the season. Mikey Eyssimont assisted on the empty netter, which was his 97th career point for the Huskies.
The Huskies travel to Grand Forks next weekend to take on the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota to complete the regular season before coming home to host an NCHC opponent in the opening round of the playoffs on March 9-11.
