#1 Huskies to wrap up regular season with games at UND on March 2-3

 The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-6-5, 15-4-3 NCHC) will finish out its 2017-18 regular season with a pair of games at #13/14 North Dakota (14-11-9, 8-9-5 NCHC) on March 2-3. Both games will be played at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The game on March 2 will begin at 7:37 p.m. and the game on March 3 will start at 7:07 p.m.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll this week. SCSU also gained a #1 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. UND is ranked #13/14 in the polls this week.
LEAGUE CHAMPS: SCSU clinched the NCHC regular season title with its four point weekend vs. Denver. This marks the second time in team history that SCSU has won the Penrose Cup (first was in 2013-14) and the third time SCSU has won a regular season league title during the DI era. SCSU also won the WCHA regular season crown in 2012-13. As a DIII affiliate, SCSU won the NCHA league title in 1986-87. SCSU has already clinched home ice in the upcomig NCHC playoffs vs. Miami, which will be held at SCSU on March 9-11. Tickets for those games can be purchased at scsutickets.com or by calling 1-877-SCSUTIX.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: David Hrenak was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 26 for his efforts against Denver. Hrenak was 1-0-1 vs. the defending national champion Pioneers. He had 50 saves combined over the weekend and helped SCSU clinch the Penrose Cup on home ice for the first time...Hrenak was also named the NCHC Rookie of the Month for February 2018. He was 4-0-1 record in net with a .935 save percentage and a 1.58 goals-against average during the month.
THE WEEKEND UPDATE: The Huskies clinched the NCHC crown with a four point weekend vs. Denver on Feb. 23-24 at the HBNHC. SCSU opened the weekend with a 1-1 tie, which was ended by DU gaining the extra point with a goal in the 3x3 OT session. The lone goal in the contest for SCSU was posted by Blake Lizotte with assists from Mikey Eyssimont and Patrick Newell. David Hrenak had 25 saves in the game as both teams went scoreless on the power play. DU outshot the Huskies 26-20 in the game...on Feb. 24, the Huskies claimed a 4-2 victory. Robby Jackson opened the scoring with a SHG at 14:43 of the first period. DU replied with a goal at 16:13 of the first period followed by a second period marker by Jacob Benson at 2:34. In the third, DU tied the game at 2-2 before Ryan Poehling added the game winner with a breakaway score at 12:25. Jon Lizotte finished the game with an ENG at 19:20 of the third to make the final 4-2. Hrenak gained the win with 25 saves in the game as both teams were held scoreless on the PP. SCSU outshot the Pios 33-27 in the contest.
OLYMPIC HUSKIES: The USA men's hockey team featured two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen was selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg serves as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 2g/10a for the Huskies this season.Â
ALMOST THERE: Mikey Eyssimont needs three more points to join SCSU's 100 point club. He had two assists in the weekened series vs. DU and now has 14g/20a this winter. He would become the 30th player in SCSU history to score 100-plus points. In his career, Eyssimont has 42g/55a in 109 career games played.
SHORT STORY: Robby Jackson posted his third SHG of the season on Feb. 24. The team record for most SHGs in a season is six by Mark Hartigan in 2001-02. Jackson now has six SHGs in his career. The team career record for SHGs is 9 by Dave Paradise from 1993-97. SCSU has 7 SHGs this season as a team, while the team record of 14 was set in 1993-94. Jackson leads the NCHC this year with 3 SHGs.
HOBEY HOPEFULL: Postseason honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt ranks first among the nation's defensive players with a scoring rate of 1.03 PPG. He has 7g/26 for 33 points. He leads the nation with a +23 on the plus/minus and he is among the nation's top shot blockers with 68. Schuldt also ranks 8th in the nation with 0.81 assists per game. In his career, Schuldt has 78 points (25g/73a) and currently ranks 8th in the all-time scoring list for SCSU blueliners (one point ahead of Bret Hedican, who now ranks 9th with 77 career points). He leads the NCHC with .82 assists per game.
TEAM LEADERS: Robby Jackson leads SCSU with 35 points and 15 goals. Jimmy Schuldt leads the team with 26 assists and +23...Jon Lizotte leads the team with 69 blocks, while David Hrenak paces SCSU with a 1.89 GAA and a .929 save percentage. Jeff Smith leads SCSU with a .765 win rate and an 11-2-4 record in the nets...Jackson and Eyssimont rank second on the team with 20 assists apiece, while Eyssimont ranks second on the team with 14 assists.
SCSU NOTES:Â SCSU was 3-4-0 during the month of January and the Huskies were 6-0-2 during the month of February...SCSU leads the NCHC in scoring with an average of 3.95 goals per game this year in NCHC games...SCSU ranks 2nd in the nation with a scoring average of 3.81 goal per game.

SENIOR SALUTE: The game on Feb. 24 was designated as SCSU Senior Night. The Huskies' three seniors on the 2017-18 were saluted as they played in their final regular season home game for the Huskies at the HBNHC. This group includes defenseman Mika Ilvonen, forward Judd Peterson and forward Blake Winiecki. This group of seniors has helped lead the Huskies to 88 victories, two NCAA tournament bids, the 2018 Penrose Cup title and the 2016 NHCH Frozen faceoff title over the past four seasons.
HOT STREAK: The Huskies have not lost a game since a 5-1 setback at UMD on Jan. 26. SCSU is 8-0-2 in its last nine games played since that loss. SCSU opened the season with 7 consecutive wins. SCSU's longest consecutive undefeated streak is 15 games from Nov. 4, 2006 to Jan. 6, 2007.
