Gameday Preview | #21 Huskies Host UW-Parkside at US Bank Stadium

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The #21 nationally-ranked St. Cloud State baseball team (2-1) is set to host two seven-inning games against Wisconsin-Parkside (0-0) on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018. St. Cloud State went 2-1 in their season opener against regional opponent, Missouri Western State. Game times are set for 11 AM and 1 PM. The second game will begin approximately 10 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
SERIES PREVIEW
UW-Parkside will be playing their first games of the 2018 season against St. Cloud State on Wednesday morning. Last season, the Rangers finished 18-22 overall. Parkside's Nate Stolte is a key returner on the mound for the Rangers after recording a 1.72 ERA in 47 innings of work. Connor Cunningham is also returning to the bump for the Rangers after logging 45.2 innings with a 5.84 ERA. Offensively, the Rangers are led by Max Widmar who hit .359 in 2017 and recorded 28 RBI's over 41 hits.
INSIDE LOOK
Dominic Austing will be receiving the first game start while Kyle Boser will be starting in the second game of the twin-bill on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Last weekend, Jackson Goplen totaled 7 RBI's on the weekend and Caeden Harris hit .556 over three games, while totaling 3 RBI's. Freshman, Reid Conlee had an impressive debut after going 3-8 on the weekend with three walks and four RBI's.
Matthew Osterberg was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Week after his 4.2 shutout innings out of the Huskies' bullpen to solidify a game two victory against Missouri Western State.
Shannon Ahern also logged 3.2 innings of shutout baseball in the series finale against the Griffons, where he recorded two strikeouts and did not allow a hit.
VETERAN PRESENCE
The Huskies are returning eight of their nine starters in the field. All-NSIC selections, Mat Meyer, Bo Schmitz and NSIC gold-glove third-baseman, Ethan Ibarra are of notable returners for SCSU in the field. Senior captain, Jackson Goplen returns to the top-half of the Huskies batting order after leading the club in homeruns (7), stolen bases (7) and slugging percentage (.525). Junior outfielder, Mitch Mallek led St. Cloud State in batting average (.350) while driving in 50 runs with 69 hits in 2017. Shortstop, Jordan Joseph also returns after totaling 60 hits, seven doubles and four homeruns in 2017.

Little Falls, Minn. native, Kyle Boser (2-1, 3.57 ERA in 2017) and Aaron Hammann (3-2, 3.99 ERA in 2017) are also returning for the Huskies. Left-handed starters, Zach Siggelkow (4-1, 4.89 ERA in 2017) and Shannon Ahern (2-3, 5.04 ERA in 2017) will also be returning for SCSU.
NEW FACES, SAME GREAT TALENT
St. Cloud State head coach, Pat Dolan has put together another class of first-year players that are able to contribute early and often for the Huskies in 2018. St. Cloud Tech graduate, Trevor Koenig, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2017 MLB Draft will be a key arm to follow for the Huskies as well as freshman pitcher, Matt Osterberg. Osterberg was the Division Three Wisconsin State Player of the Year in 2017 out of Coleman High School. He was 11-1 over 65.1 innings with a 0.75 ERA, while also striking out 122 batters. Riley Ahern maintained a 0.81 ERA in his senior year at the Academy of Holy Angels last spring. Reid Conlee is also looking to provide quality AB's and more depth as a catcher and corner infielder after hitting eight doubles and four homeruns for Blaine High School last spring. Zach Walz (Century CC) will be a dynamic two-way player for SCSU, as he was named a NJCAA All-American in 2017. Ricardo Garcia (St. Cloud Technical CC) and Nathan Strobel (Allen County CC) will each bring depth and quality innings to the Huskies after coming off of successful junior college careers.
