LAST TIME OUT
The Huskies are coming off a split on Wednesday against Minnesota Crookston. SCSU took game one 3-2 behind a dominant pitching performance from senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.). Brassfield threw a complete game gem, allowing just six hits and two earned runs while striking out 11. The Huskies trailed 2-1 entering the sixth inning, but senior Nick Ibrahim (Woodbury, Minn.) picked up a two-run, go-ahead double with the bases loaded to SCSU in front.
In game two, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first and would survive multiple Huskies comebacks. SCSU tied the score at 1-1 in the second on a sacrifice fly from redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.). After UMC went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the frame, the Huskies evened the game again in fourth on a solo home run from junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). Crookston would score two in the fourth and one in the eighth, however, to win 5-2.
FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
Freshman Ryan Cahoon (Northfield, Minn.) has stepped in immediately and been a go-to bat in the middle of the lineup for the Huskies, leading the team and all NSIC batters in on-base percentage (.546) and walks (35). In addition to those two categories, Cahoon is second on the Huskies in batting average (.358) while ranking second in triples (2), third in slugging percentage (.481), and sixth in hits (29).
Cahoon had five hits against Southwest Minnesota State on March 29, which is tied for the most hits in a single game by an NSIC hitter this season and the most by a SCSU hitter since John Nett had five on April 30, 2023, against Minnesota Duluth. Cahoon drew a walk in game two against Crookston, pushing his season total to 35, tying him for fifth in program history for walks in a single season.
WIL-MIS THAT BALL CASTRO
Since joining the Huskies ahead of the 2025 season, junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) has been an extra base machine, hitting 29 last season (16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs) before adding another 24 (13 doubles, four triples, seven home runs) through 31 games this season. Castro's 29 extra base hits in 2025 led all Huskies and ranked just outside the top 10 on SCSU's single season all-time list.
Castro leads the Huskies in batting average (.387), OPS (1.240), hits (43), doubles (13), triples (four), home runs (seven), runs (27), RBI's (28), and slugging percentage (.766). He ranks among the NSIC's top 10 in numerous offensive categories, ranking first in triples (four), second in doubles (13), fourth in slugging percentage (.745) and fifth in OPS (1.206).
Castro is currently riding a five-game hitting streak with four multi-hit performances, including a four-hit game on March 29 against Southwest Minnesota State. During the five-game stretch, Castro is batting 11-19 (.579 AVG) with seven runs, nine RBI, four doubles, and two home runs.
THE BRYCE IS RIGHT
In his second season with SCSU, senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.) has been lights out in the rotation for the Huskies. Brassfield leads the team in innings pitched (46.1), strikeouts (57), complete games (2), and is tied for the team lead in wins (3).
Brassfield has also been one of the top pitchers in the conference, leading the NSIC in strikeouts (57) and complete games (2) while ranking third in innings pitched (46.1) and eighth in ERA (4.27).
In his last start against Crookston, Brassfield threw the third complete game of his Huskies career while setting a new career-high in strikeouts with 11. It was the third start of the season for Brassfield of 7.0 innings or longer, and he has pitched at least 5.0 innings in six of his eight starts.
