SCSU Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Minnesota State

Minnesota State powers way to pair of wins against Huskies
MANKATO, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (20-26, 16-17 NSIC) lost their final two road games of the season, falling to Minnesota State (36-10, 28-5 NSIC) 12-1 and 8-2. The Mavericks scored early in each game and were able to hold the leads thanks to great starting pitching.
Game 1: MSU 12, SCSU 1
The Mavericks got off to a strong start, scoring in each of the first three innings to put up a 6-0 lead. Minnesota State brought eight batters to the plate in the first, picking up two hits, two walks, and a sacrifice bunt for three runs. A sacrifice fly and RBI double plated two more runs in the second, and a hit-by-pitch and RBI single drove in the sixth run in the third.
After the Huskies put up a zero in the fourth, Minnesota State scored six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Mavericks hit two home runs, a three-run homer and a two-run shot to go along with a sacrifice fly in the frame.
SCSU got on the board in the sixth to break up the shutout. Redshirt junior Hayden Frank (St. Michael, Minn.) led off with a single and moved to third on a single to right field by sophomore Austin Baumhover (Van Meter, Iowa). Redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.) followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to plate Frank.
The Huskies put two runners on in the seventh but weren't able to generate any more offense and fell 12-1.
TOP HUSKIES
It was another three-run first inning for the Mavericks in game two. A two-run home run to left field opened the scoring, followed by a double and an RBI single. The longball parade continued in the second inning with a three-run homer to make it 6-0 Minnesota State.
The Mavericks would tack on another run in the fourth, as a leadoff double and stolen base put a runner on third. After a strikeout, a sacrifice fly brought home the run and made it 7-0. Minnesota State stole a run in the fifth, putting runners on first and third with two outs and pulling off a delayed steal of second. While the Huskies pulled off the rundown and got the out, the runner came home from third to score.
In the eighth, the Huskies were able to break through against the Mavericks pitching. Senior Nick Ibrahim (Woodbury, Minn.) led off with a hit-by-pitch and Baumhover followed with a walk. With two outs, junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) drove a double to the left-center field gap, scoring Ibrahim and Baumhover.
The Mavericks went to the bullpen in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to earn the 8-2 win.

The Huskies close out the regular season with a three-game series against UMary (32-15, 25-9 NSIC) starting with a doubleheader on Friday, May 1. First pitch is scheduled for noon from Joe Faber Field.
