Late rally falls short against Marauders pitching
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (20-28, 16-19 NSIC) dropped the first two games of their series with UMary (34-15, 27-9 NSIC), falling 8-1 and 3-1. The Huskies couldn't break through against a tough Marauder pitching staff and were held to just two runs on the day. With the losses, the Huskies will officially miss out on the NSIC Tournament.
Game 1: MARY 8, SCSU 1
The game was scoreless up until the third inning, as UMary grabbed the lead in the top of the frame. A hit-by-pitch opened the inning, then a single and two-out RBI double followed to put the Marauders up 1-0.
The Huskies responded in the bottom of the fourth. Redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.) led off with a walk and stole second. Junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) lifted a deep fly ball to right-center field to move Robinson to third. With the infield back and one out, senior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba) grounded out to second base to bring home Robinson and tie the game.
UMary would break things open in the fifth, scoring five times and batting around, bringing nine batters to the plate. A single, walk, and home run opened the inning before two more singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, but a strikeout followed for the second out. A two-out base hit would score two more runs and put the Marauders up 6-1.
It would become 8-1 in the seventh, as the first three batters of the inning reached base. A walk and a double set the stage for a two-run single for the added insurance runs for the Marauders. UMary held the Huskies off the board in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Game 2: MARY 3, SCSU 1
The second game was a pitcher's duel, as both starters put together solid outings. The Huskies turned to senior Bryce Brassfield (Gilbert, Ariz.), who worked 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts on the mound, allowing just two earned runs.
The Huskies would get their first lead of the series in the bottom of the third. Baumhover drew a one-out walk and moved to second on redshirt junior Hayden Frank's (St. Michael, Minn.) single. Robinson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought up Castro, who hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-center to score Baumhover.
UMary answered back in the top of the fourth, tying the game on a one-out RBI single. The Marauders threatened for more but the Huskies were able to catch a runner stealing to help Brassfield escape.
Both sides were unable to score until the top of the eighth. With two outs, a single to left field ended Brassfield's outing after 124 pitches. A wild pitch and two RBI singles followed to give UMary a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Huskies had chance for a rally in the ninth. Tweet led off with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate and moved to second on redshirt senior Eric Bello's (Manati, Puerto Rico) infield single. With two runners on base, though, a ground ball to the shortstop resulted in a double play to end the game.
