St. Cloud State Athletics Mourns the Loss of Former Baseball Coach Denny Lorsung

Lorsung coached Huskies Baseball for 28 seasons and won 542 games from 1979-2006
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Athletics is mourning the loss of former baseball head coach Denny Lorsung, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 78. Lorsung was the head coach of St. Cloud State Baseball for 28 seasons from 1979-2006, won 542 games and led the Huskies to two conference championships and one NCAA Tournament appearance.
Lorsung was the all-time winningest coach in program history and the longest tenured coach in SCSU Athletics history at the time of his retirement in 2006. The Huskies went 542-555-4 in 28 seasons under Lorsung while winning the 1980 NIC and 1991 NCC Tournament Championships. The Huskies also made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1991 with Lorsung leading the way. He was named the 2001 NCC Coach of the Year after a 19-13 campaign. He was the assistant coach under Jim Stanek for one season in 1978 before taking over the head coaching position in 1979.
Prior to his time at SCSU, Lorsung was the head coach at Saint John's for two seasons (1976-77), where he went 25-16 and helped the Johnnies win the 1977 MIAC championship.
An Alexandria native, Lorsung graduated from SCSU in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in social studies and played two seasons with the Huskies baseball team in 1969 and 1970. In the 1969 season, the Huskies won the NIC and NAIA Regional championships before placing third in the NAIA National Tournament. Lorsung wife, Anne Abicht, was SCSU's Athletics Media Relations from 1985-2015 and was inducted into the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
