#1 Huskies punch their ticket to St. Paul with 4-3 OT win over Miami

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (24-7-6) earned a spot in the upcoming NCHC Frozen Faceoff at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul next weekend thanks to a thrilling come from behind 4-3 OT win over Miami University (12-20-5) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Sunday, March 11.
The Huskies advanced in the best-of-three series against Miami after winning the Friday night game and the game today. This marks SCSU third trip to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff as the Huskies won the tournament title in 2016 and also made a finals appearance in 2015. As the 2017-18 NCHC regular season champs, SCSU will be the number one seed in the Frozen Faceoff and it will match up against North Dakota on Friday, March 16.
Minnesota Duluth and Denver will play the other semifinal game on March 16 in St. Paul. The times of both games will be determined on Monday, March 12. SCSU fans can plan on a pre-game social at the Liffey in downtown St. Paul - across the street from the Xcel Energy Center.
In the deciding game on March 11, the Huskies struggled during the first period as Miami charged to a 2-0 lead with goals by Grant Hutton (9:31) and a power play marker by Casey Gilling (16:22).
The Huskies broke the ice early in the second period with a power play tally by Hobey Baker candidate Jimmy Schuldt. This was his 10th goal of the season and the slapper from the blueline was set up with assists by Robby Jackson and Mikey Eyssimont. This was Jackson's 27th assist of 2017-18 and it was Eyssimont's 100th career point with the Huskies. He becomes the 30th player in the team's Division I history to hit the 100-point plateau.
Miami quickly replied with a goal at 1:31 by Karch Bachman before the game's tide turned in favor of the Huskies. To close out the second period, Eyssimont posted his first goal of the evening at 18:13 with a solo assist to Jack Ahcan.
Judd Peterson tied the contest at 14:08 of the third period with his sixth goal of the season with assists from Jon Lizotte and Will Borgen, which were the 12th assists of the season for both SCSU blueliners.
The goal forced another OT session for the Huskies, which was their sixth OT game in their last nine outings.
Eyssimont helped wrote SCSU's ticket to St. Paul at 8:14 of the OT session when he scored the game winner with assists from Patrick Newell and Ahcan. This was Eyssimont's team leading 17th goal of the season and his 39th point of the year. The goal ended the game with SCSU owning a 42-22 lead in shots on goal. On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and Miami was 1-1.
In the nets, David Hrenak was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 19 saves while Ryan Larkin had 38 saves for Miami.
