The three-time national champion St. Cloud State University wrestling team had the unique opportunity to spend a few hours working out with members of the U.S. Marine Corps recently. The partnership was part of the Huskies' preseason training program, which will lead to the team's 2018-19 schedule that starts on Nov. 1 with the Black/Red Classic intrasquad meet at Halenbeck Hall.
The team partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and the day allowed the Marines to provide three basic principles from their physical training exercises to the Huskies. Those principles are Courage, Honor and Commitment. In addition, team work, competing and following instructions under distress dominated the two-hour work-out session.Â
Â
"This was a great opportunity for Huskies wrestling to take part in," said SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo. "I really appreciate all of the Marines taking time out of their busy schedules to help make our young men better people. We learned a lot about ourselves and the things we need to get better to accomplish our personal and team goals."Â
Â
The Huskies would like to send out a special thanks to U.S. Marine Captain, Kyle Randow for his organization and management of this event.
St. Cloud State has been a dominant force in NCAA Division II wrestling over the past decade. SCSU has won NCAA Division II national championships in 2015, 2016 and 2018 along with winning seven consecutive NSIC championships under the leadership of head coach Steve Costanzo. The Huskies alson captured the NWCA DII National Duals championship in 2018.
At the NCAA Division II championships, the Huskies have finished no lower than eighth place since 2009. SCSU placed second at the NCAA DII championships in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017 along with its three national titles in 2015, 2016 and 2018. SCSU posted a 19-0, 8-0 NSIC record in 2017-18 and the Huskies have not lost a dual match in NSIC action since Jan. 27, 2011.
