Huskies set for rematch with Minot State, Mary
1/10/2019 11:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team has spent quite a bit of time away from St. Cloud, Minnesota to open the second half of the 2018-19 season. After three straight road games, St. Cloud State is finally returning home to host Minot State University and the University of Mary this upcoming Friday and Saturday.
This will be the second meeting between the Huskies and the Beavers and Mauraders this season, as the teams already met in early December. In fact, St. Cloud State split that particular weekend, falling in the opener to Mary by a final score of 59-47 before rebounding for its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Minot State 61-60.
This weekend, the Huskies will be playing in the comforts of their home, Halenbeck Hall, where they've lost just one game all season. Tip off for Friday's contest against the Beavers is set for 5:30 p.m. before Saturday's 3:30 p.m. match up with the Marauders.
Fans who cannot attend the game in person can follow the Huskies via live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast. Score updates can also be found on St. Cloud State women's basketball official Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's tip offs:
.05 – It was quite a memorable outing the last time St. Cloud State took on Minot State. The Huskies rallied for a huge 61-60 victory over the Beavers, thanks in large part to the outstanding play of Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) and Madelin Dammann (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia). Kilboten scored what was then a career-high 12 points in the second half of the game, which put St. Cloud State in the perfect position to at least win or tie the game, despite being down by 15 points at the half. It was Dammann that provided the ultimate dagger, as she banked the off-balance jumper with .05 seconds on the clock to secure the 61-60 win for her team.
11 – The Huskies are once again coming off an outstanding offensive weekend, as they made a season-high 11 threes in their 68-58 victory over Minnesota-Crookston last weekend. Five of those threes were accounted for by senior guard Mallie Doucette (Colfax, Wis. / Colfax), who had a hot hand in the win over the Golden Eagles. The senior scored a team and game-high 23 points in the victory on 9-17 shooting from the floor, including a 5-10 mark from beyond the arc.
40 – History certainly had its eyes on St. Cloud State sophomore guard Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson), who made quite a bit of it in the Huskies 74-56 win over Bemidji State on Saturday, January 5. The sophomore scored a career-high 40 points in the win, becoming just the third Husky in program history to score at least that many points in a single game. Additionally, she accounted for 54 percent of the Huskies offense in the win thanks to her 16-23 (.696) shooting from the floor.
40/42 – Wortz wasn't the only Husky to score 40+ points against the Beavers. Men's senior guard Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) scored 42 points in the men's 107-101 double overtime victory over Bemidji State. The duo become the first women's and men's basketball player in St. Cloud State history to score 40+ points on the same day and the first to do so in NSIC, according to available records.
11.5 – The Marauders have the third-highest scoring margin in the NSIC this season. In 11 games this season, Mary has defeated opponents by approximately 11.5 points, as the team scores an average of 74.9 per game while holding opponents to 63.5 points per game. The margin, though, is a bit slimmer against NSIC opponents. In eight conference games, the Marauders have won by just 7.3 points per game, which ranks fifth in the conference.
