ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Some may say it was only a matter of time for St. Cloud State University men's basketball senior Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook). The senior guard is no stranger to making history, especially this 2018-19 season. On Friday, Davis continued to cement his name in the St. Cloud State men's basketball record books, as he became the program's all-time leading scorer and helped the Huskies defeat Minot State University at home by a final score of 89-54.
Davis needed just 32-points entering Friday evening's game against the Beavers to surpass Dan Hagen and become the Huskies all-time leading scorer with 2137 points in his career. Davis scored exactly that in 31 minutes of play, as he was not only the team's top scorer on the night, but the game's as well. With 7:43 remaining in regulation, and the game well in hand for the Huskies, the senior made an off-balance jumper to give his team a 79-39 edge over the Beavers. However, that basket was so much more than the team's 78th and 79th points of the game. That basket broke Hagen's 38-year old school record for career-points and made Davis the all-time scoring leader just 72 games into his St. Cloud State basketball career.
Davis wasn't the only Husky to find success against Minot State Friday evening. Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) scored 15 points thanks to his impressive shooting. Overall, the senior was 5-8 from the floor and 5-7 from beyond the arc.
Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Howard College) was perfect, as he scored 10 points on 4-4 shooting with a 2-2 mark from three-point range. Jace Kitchen (Dekalb, Ill. / Dekalb) added 16 points.
Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) was the team's leading rebounder, as he tallied seven in 20 minutes of play. Davis added six.
With the victory, St. Cloud State improves to 11-4 on the year and is now 6-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, January 12 when they host the University of Mary at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
