ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team improved to 12-4 on the season and 7-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play thanks to a 60-58 victory over the University of Mary.
Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) was the Huskies leading scorer on the day, tallying 23 points on 10-20 shooting in 38 minutes of play. Fellow senior Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) added 16 points in the victory, while Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) led the way on the boards with a team-high and game-leading 13 rebounds.
St. Cloud State led Mary 33-30 at the half thanks to Davis 11 points and outstanding defensive play. In fact, not a single Marauder scored over 10 points in the first half, as the Huskies held their opponents to under 50 percent shooting from both inside and outside the perimeter. St. Cloud State's strong play continued in the early stages of the second half, as back-to-back steal-and-dunk plays by Davis resulted in a 49-38 lead for the Huskies.
While the Marauders did come back to take a lead of their own with 5:42 remaining in regulation, St. Cloud State showed poise, as free throws by Adam Heede-Andersen (Copenhagen, Denmark / Stenhus Gymnasium) cut Mary's lead to 54-53. In fact, the senior made another set of free throws not three minutes later when the Marauders managed to retake a three-point lead, pulling the Huskies within one at 56-55.
A Jace Kitchen (Deklab, Ill. / Dekalb) block eventually led to a Theisen three and a 58-56 lead for St. Cloud State. While Mary managed to even the score on their next offensive possession, Davis came up clutch on his own, as he hit the game-winning shot at 1:26 to put the Huskies ahead 60-58. A stellar defense stand would cement the win, as the Marauders were unable to get a quality shot off in the closing seconds.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 12-4 and the team is 7-3 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Friday, January 18 when they travel to Concordia-St. Paul. Tip off is 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
