The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-3-2, 7-1-2 NCHC) battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to earn a big 4-2 victory over #5 Minnesota Duluth (12-6-2, 5-4-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.
The Huskies scored four unanswered goals after being down 2-0 midway through the first period to earn the victory. SCSU maintained its hold on first place in the always rugged NCHC and will next square off against league rival Western Michigan on Jan. 18-19 in St. Cloud. The Broncos currently sit in second place in the NCHC with a record of 13-6-1, 6-3-1 NCHC.
Minnesota Duluth opened the game's scoring at 3:13 of the first period with a goal by Riley Tufte. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 2-0 with a power play Justin Richards at 13:37 of the first period.
SCSU rallied in the closing minutes of the first period with the Huskies' first goal of the night posted by Spencer Meier at 17:51 on the power play. This was his first collegiate goal, which was assisted by Jack Ahcan and Patrick Newell. The point was Ahcan's team leading 16th assist of the season and it was Newell's 11th assist and his 95th career point at SCSU.
The Huskies tied the game up at 18:40 with a steal by Jimmy Schuldt in front of the UMD net. He then converted the turnover into his sixth goal of the season that made it 2-2. This was Schuldt's 34th career goal and his 101st career point at SCSU.
St. Cloud State gained a 3-2 lead in the second period with a goal by Easton Brodzinski at 4:25. He was assisted on the play by Sam Hentges and Micah Miller. The goal was Brodzinski's ninth of the season, while it was Hentges fourth helper of the year and Miller's second assist as a Husky.
In the third period, SCSU iced the contest with a goal by Robby Jackson at 18:01. He was assisted on the play by Newell and Blake Lizotte, which was his 10th goal of the season. Newell now has 12 assists this year and needs just four points to join SCSU's elite 100-point club. The goal was Jackson's 43rd at SCSU and his 102nd career point.
In the game, SCSU was outshot 32-22 by the Bulldogs. On the power play, SCSU was 1-2 and UMD was 1-5. David Hrenak improved to 11-2-1 in the season with the victory in the nets as he made 30 saves in the game.
