#2 St. Cloud State men's hockey back home for games vs. #10/11 WMU

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-3-2, 7-1-2 NCHC) will return to action in the always rugged National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a pair of home games against #10/11 Western Michigan University (13-6-1, 6-3-1 NCHC).  The game on Friday, Jan. 18 will begin at 7:07 p.m. CT at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and the game on Saturday, Jan. 19 will get underway at 6:07 p.m. CT.Â

IN THE POLLS:  The Huskies received a #2 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll.  In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #2 ranking. Â
LAST TIME OUT:  The Huskies split a weekend series against #5 Minnesota Duluth.  On Jan. 11, SCSU lost a close 3-1 match at Amsoil.  The lone goal in the contest for SCSU was charted by Robby Jackson with assists from Jack Ahcan and Sam Hentges.  In the game, SCSU outshot UMD 31-18.  Of note, the game marked the only time this season that the Huskies have scored less than two goals in a game and it was SCSU's first NCHC loss of the season...on Jan. 12, SCSU rebounded with a 4-2 win at UMD.  SCSU's trailed 2-0 in the contest before Spencer Meier's PPG in the first period broke the shutout.  Jimmy Schuldt, Robby Jackson (GWG) and Easton Brodzinski all scored  goals, while SCSU's defense shutout the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game.  In the game, SCSU was outshot 32-22 as David Hrenak came up with 30 saves in goal to earn the win.

CAREER FIRST:  SCSU freshman Spencer Meier scored his first career goal with his PPG against UMD on Jan. 12.  Meier now has one goal and five assists for the Huskies.  He is a resident of nearby Sartell, Minn and a grad of Sartell H.S.
NEXT MILESTONE:  Senior defender and post-season honors candidate Jimmy Schuldt is moving closer to the team's record for most career points scored by a defenseman.  Schuldt currently has 101 career points (34g/67a).  The team's record is currently owned by Kelly Hultgren, who had 107 career points (28g/79a).  Schuldt already owns the team record for most career goals by a defenseman with 34.  He is also tied for the team record by a defenseman with 18 power play goals along with Justin Fletcher (2003-07).
WORLD JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT: Forward Ryan Poehling helped Team USA gain a second place finish at the 2019 IIHF World Juniors.  Poehling was voted the MVP in the tournament, makde the tourney All-Star Team and was voted the Best Forward in the tournament.  He had five goals and three assists in tournament play (3rd best).  Poehling competed for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2018, where Team USA won a Bronze Medal.  Poehling joined Mark Parrish (1996 & 1997) as the other Husky who has played in two World Junior tourneys for Team USA. A total of 10 SCSU players have skated for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors since 1991...he will be joined on the ice this weekend by Team USA teammate Mattais Samuelson, a freshman defenseman from WMU.
ON A ROLL:  Junior blueliner Jack Ahcan will bring a five-game point scoring streak into the games this weekend vs. WMU.  He has posted six points (1g/5a) during the last five games played.  Ahcan leads the team with 16 assists, which also ranks 16th in the nation at 0.80 assists per game.
NATIONAL LEADERS:  As of Jan. 15, SCSU ranks second among NCAA DI teams with a scoring rate of 3.90 goals per game...SCSU ranks 11th on defense with a 2.15 goals allowed per game average in 2018-19...SCSU ranks 3rd in the nation with a scoring margin of 1.75 goals per game this winter...SCSU's power play ranks 7th in the nation at 25.0% and the SCSU penalty kill ranks fourth in the country at 88.1%...SCSU is one of only two teams in the country this year with three or less losses in 2018-19.  UMass is 17-3-0 and SCSU is 15-3-2...David Hrenak's winning percentage of .821 ranks third in the nation.  He is 11-2-1 this season...Nolan Walker ranks 9th in the nation among DI rookies with a scoring rate of 0.90 ppg.  Walker has 5g/13a this season and last weekend was the first series that he did not chart a point in the two games...Jimmy Schuldt and Jack Ahcan rank 13th among DI blueliners with a scoring rate of 0.90 ppg...Easton Brodzinski and Patrick Newell both lead the Huskies with four GWG this season, which ranks 6th among DI players...Patrick Newell (11g/12a) ranks 21st in the nation in scoring at 1.15 ppg.  Of note, Newell needs four points to join SCSU's 100-point club.  He currently has 28g/68a during his 126 career games played at SCSU. Both Robby Jackson and Jimmy Schuldt earlier this season joined SCSU's 100-point club on Jan. 5, 2019.
FYI:Â Jimmy Schuldt has played in 137 consecutive games at SCSU.

TEAM NOTES: Jack Ahcan and Nick Perbix lead the Huskies on the +/- at +14...Robby Jackson leads the Huskies with 73 shots on goal this season...in just two seasons of play, Easton Brodzinski already has nine game winning goals, which ranks 12th in the team records.  The team's record of 13 career GWGs is held by Joe Jensen (2002-06), Ryan Lasch (2006-10) and David Morley (2011-16)...with 43 career goals, Robby Jackson ranks 31st in the team records for career goals.  Mark Hartigan is the all-time SCSU goal leader with 86 from 1999-02...Patrick Newell ranks 23rd in the team records with 68 career assists.  Garrett Roe is SCSU's all-time assist leader with 113 from 2007-11.  Roe played for Team USA at the Olympics last year and is currently playing pro hockey in Switzerland this season.
OPPONENT NOTES:  Western Michigan is led by sixth year head coach Andy Murray. A 10-year head coaching veteran in the NHL, Murray posted a 333-278-58-71 career record that included stints with the Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). He also served as an assistant coach with Philadelphia, Minnesota (North Stars) and Winnipeg (Jets) during his pro coaching career..SCSU is 7-3-2 in the all-time series against WMU...SCSU is 2-1-2 in the last five outings against WMU and SCSU is 5-0-3 in play against WMU at the Lawson Arena in the series, which dates back to a 4-2 win in St. Cloud on Dec. 29, 2011...SCSU is 7-4-1 in games played against WMU at the HBNHC...in the all-time series, SCSU is 12-4-4 against WMU...Jimmy Schuldt has scored 13 points vs. WMU during his career (4g/9a)...Josh Passolt leads WMU with 14g/9a.  He is the newphew of former SCSU hockey standout Jeff Passolt.
