#2 St. Cloud State men's hockey rolls to 3-0 victory over #10/11 WMU

Hrenak collects 23 saves in shutout win at the HBNHC
The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (16-3-2, 8-1-2 NCHC) added another NCHC victory to its 2018-19 resume with a solid 3-0 victory over #10/11 Western Michigan University (13-7-1, 6-4-1 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
SCSU sophomore netminder David Hrenak made 23 saves in the win for the Huskies, which was his third shutout of the season and his sixth career shutouts at SCSU. He now ranks fourth in the team record for most career shutouts along with Bobby Goepfert (2005-07), Jase Weslosky (2006-09) and Brian Leitza (1994-98). His three shutouts this season also ranks fourth in the team record for most shutouts in a season.
On offense, junior forward Nick Poehling posted the game winner at 1:09 of the second period with assists from his brothers Ryan Poehling and Jack Poehling. This was Nick Poehling's second goal of the season, while it was Ryan Poehling's 15th assist of the year and Jack Poehling's fifth assist of the winter.
The Huskies added a goal at 9:20 of the second period when rookie forward Micah Miller scored with assists from Easton Brodzinski and Sam Hentges. This was Miller's first goal at St. Cloud State, while it was the sixth assist of the year for both Brodzinski and Hentges.
To cap the evening, Jack Poehling scored an unassisted empty net goal at 19:07 of the third period to make the final 3-0. This was Jack Poehling's fourth goal of the 2018-19 campaign.
The game was a defensive battle in the first period as SCSU managed to outshoot the Broncos 6-4. In the second period, SCSU put the pedal down as it outshot WMU by a 19-9 margin. Of note, the 19 shots on net were the most charted by the Huskies in a period this season. On the night, SCSU outshot WMU 37-23.
SCSU was 3-of-3 on the penalty kill in the game and WMU was also 2-of-2 on the PK. The Huskies have now recorded five shutouts this season and currently rank sixth in the nation with a 2.05 goals allowed per game average. The victory also helped SCSU pad its lead in the NCHC race with 27 league points, while WMU ranks second with 20 points and UMD has 19.
SCSU and WMU will complete their weekend series with a 6:07 p.m. game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, Jan. 19.
