ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It's not everyday fans get to see even one player score 30 points in a collegiate basketball game.
It's even more rare for them to see two.
St. Cloud State University men's basketball fans certainly got their money's worth Saturday afternoon, as they not only saw historic scoring from Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) and Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook), but a win as well. The seniors scored 30 points each Saturday afternoon and guided St. Cloud State to a thrilling 99-84 win over Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
The Huskies led 51-43 at the half thanks to the two seniors' hot hands. Smith and Davis combined to score 28 of St. Cloud State's 51 first half points, led by Smith's 16. Davis added 12 to go along with an assist and two steals, while Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Howard Academy) tallied nine points.
The Huskies eventually pulled away in the second half, though the Dragons stingy defensive play in the second half certainly made things interesting. MSU-Moorhead managed to pull within two of St. Cloud State's lead then eventually tied the game at 70-70 with 10:25 remaining in regulation. Though the two teams traded baskets for the next minute, Smith eventually jumpstarted an 11-0 run for the Huskies, helping the team to an 85-74 lead they would never look back from.
Smith and Davis ended the game as the team's leading scorers, as they each scored 30 points apiece in the victory. The 30 points are a new career-high for Smith, who also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds in the win.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 14-6 and the team is 9-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Huskies will return to action on Friday, February 1 when they host Upper Iowa University at 7:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
