ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team and its players are no strangers to making history, especially this 2018-19 season. Already this year, the Huskies have seen several program records fall and several student-athletes reach career milestones. Friday evening, Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) joined the ranks, as he scored his 1000 career point and led St. Cloud State to. 92-74 victory over Upper Iowa University.
The Huskies jumped to an early 15-3 lead over the Peacocks in the opening minutes of the game, but Upper Iowa certainly wasn't down and out for the count. The Peacocks eventually managed to tie the score at 20-20 before taking their first lead of the game at 24-20. St. Cloud State, though, withstood Upper Iowa's attempt to take a half time lead and, thanks to a dunk from senior forward Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy), held a 37-36 lead entering the locker room at halftime.
The game stayed tight through most of the second half, as the Huskies could never secure a lead bigger than six points in the opening minutes. As time wore on, St. Cloud State's defense wore down Upper Iowa, and back-to-back threes from Thesien and another by Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) helped the Huskies take a 61-50 lead over the Peacocks with 10:56 remaining in the game.
St. Cloud State only continued to extend its lead, as Theisen was on fire from beyond the arc. With his seventh made three-pointer of the game, Theisen became the 42nd player in program history to reach the 1000-point milestone, as his 23rd point of the game counted as the 1000th of his career. Theisen went on to make one more three in the final minutes of the game before coming out with a team-leading 26 points. Davis concluded the game with 24 points, including 16 in the first half, and a team-leading nine rebounds to help the Huskies secure the 92-74 win over Upper Iowa.
With the victory, St. Cloud State improves to 15-6 overall with a 10-5 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, February 2 when they host Winona State University at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
