#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey falls 5-1 at North Dakota

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (18-4-2, 10-2-2 NCHC) suffered a 5-1 setback at the University of North Dakota (13-11-1, 7-7-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Grand Forks, N.D.
The loss snapped a four game winning streak for the Huskies and it marked just the second loss in NCHC play in 2018-19 for SCSU. The Huskies will return to action in NCHC play next weekend with a home series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Feb. 1-2 against Miami University. The game on Feb. 2 has been designated as Youth Night with all kids up to grade 12 admitted free with a paid adult (youth ticket available only as a walk-up only). The concession stands at the HBNHC will also offer $1 hot dogs that night.
North Dakota gained a quick lead in the game with its first goal at 3:22 of the first period by Gavin Hain. The Fighthing Hawks then notched the game winning goal at 6:31 of the second period with a marker by Mark Senden. UND stretched its lead in the second period to 3-0 with a goal at 8:47 by Dixon Bowen.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 17:25 of the second period with a shorthanded goal by Jimmy Schuldt. Patrick Newell and Jon Lizotte both had assists on the goal, which was Schuldt's seventh of the season. The SHG was Schuldt's 103rd career point at SCSU and it was his 35th career goal with the Huskies. Newell's assist was his 13th of the year and his team leading 25th point of the year. In 130 games played, Newell now has 98 career points (29g/68a).
In the third period, UND regained control of the contest with second goals by Hain and Bowen. Hain scored at 5:52 of the third to make it 4-1 and Bowen completed the scoring with a goal at 14:05 of the third.
In the game, UND outshot the Huskies 29-23. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-4 and the Huskies were 3-3 on the penalty kill in the contest. David Hrenak was the goalie of record for SCSU with 10 saves and three goals allowed in 28:47 minutes of play. Jeff Smith finished the game in net for SCSU with 14 saves and two goals allowed.
