Third period rally provides #7/8 Huskies with a 4-4 tie at BSU

An epic third period rally provided the #7/8 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NCHC) with a 4-4 OT tie at Bemidji State University (0-0-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) in both teams' season opener on Friday, Oct. 11 at the Sanford Center in snowy Bemidji, Minn.
The game tying goal for the Huskies was charted by Sam Hentges at 15:38 of the third period. His unassisted goal knotted the goal at 4-4 and forced it into overtime. Hentges goal capped a thrilling rally by the Huskies that included two short handed goals on the same penalty.
The game opened with a scoreless first period, which saw the Huskies outshoot the Beavers 9-5. The game's tempo changed in the second period with Bemidji State running up a 3-0 lead, which was started by a tally at 3:09 of the second by Alex Adams. Less than two minutes later, Bemidji State moved its lead to 2-0 with a marker by Ross Armour at 4:58.
To complete the second period scoring, BSU's Adam Brady scored at 16:24 to make it 3-0. The Beavers continued their attack in the opening minute of the third period with their final goal of the night at :26 by Brady.
The Huskies finally broke the ice in the third period when Kevin Fitzgerald scored at 4:52 with an assists from Nick Poehling and Nick Perbix to make the score 4-1. The rally continued at 10:01 with a shorthanded goal by Jack Ahcan, which included assists from Nick Poehling and Clark Kuster. The second SHG of the game for SCSU was posted by Clark Kuster at 13:01 with assists from Hentges and Perbix. The goal was Kuster's first in his career at SCSU.
Both SHGs were scored on the same 5:00 major penalty, which the Huskies managed to kill off without being scored on.
Hentges then added the game tying goal to force the OT session. In the game, BSU outshot the Huskies 33-30 and that included the Beavers owning a 4-3 margin in shots during the OT session. An potential game winning goal by BSU in the OT session was called back with less than :30 left to play due to goalie interference by the Beavers.
David Hrenak was the goalie of record for SCSU with 29 saves in the game and former Husky Zach Driscoll made 26 saves in the game for BSU.
