In a battle of the Huskies, the #14 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-2, 0-0-0 NCHC) will host non-conference rival #11 Northeastern University (3-0-1, 1-0-0 HE) on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:37 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 6:07 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. David HrenakSKATE WITH THE HUSKIES: Fans will have a chance to hit the ice at the HBNHC along with members of the SCSU men's and women's hockey teams after the finish of the SCSU-Northeastern game on Saturday, Oct. 26. Fans are encouraged to bring their skates to the game that night (or get a pair from the HBNHC pro shop). This is a great chance to meet your favorite SCSU players, skate a few laps, take photos and get autographs. Admission is free and open to the public for Skate with the Huskies. The event will begin immediately after the finish of the SCSU-Northeastern game on Oct. 26.
BANNER BANTER: St. Cloud State is scheduled to salute its 2018-19 NCHC regular season champions at a banner ceremony prior to the start of the game on Friday, Oct. 25. SCSU won the 2018-19 NCHC regular season title with a 30-6-3, 19-2-3 NCHC record. The 19 wins set a new league record for most conference victories in a single season.
STATUE UNVEIL: SCSU is scheduled to unveil a new Herb Brooks statue in front of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Oct. 26 before the Huskies' game vs. Northeastern. The statue pays tribute to the late Herb Brooks, who coached at SCSU during the 1986-87 season and played a key role in helping the Huskies make the move to the NCAA DI level in 1987-88. The public is invited to the statue unveiling slated for 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in front of the HBNHC.
SCSU STUDENTS GET IN FREE: All SCSU students with a valid ID card will be admitted FREE to all regular season home games in 2019-20. Just show your ID card at the gate and you get in FREE...it is that easy!
IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #14 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll. In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #14 ranking.
NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. This marks the third time the Huskies have won the Penrose Cup, which is the most of any team in the NCHC. SCSU also won the NCHC regular season title in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
SEASON OPENER: The Huskies opened their 2019-20 season with a pair of tie games at Bemidji State on Oct. 11-12. SCSU trailed 4-0 early in the third period at BSU on Oct. 11 before igniting for four unanswered goals to gain a 4-4 OT decision against the Beavers. Kevin Fitzgerald opened the scoring in the third period before the Huskies took advantage of two shorthanded goals on the same penalty in the third. Jack Ahcan scored the first goal before Clark Kuster made it 4-3 with his SHG. To cap the night, Sam Hentges posted the game tying goal with an unassisted breakaway off of a steal...SCSU finished the weekend with a 2-2 tie against BSU on Oct. 12. The Huskies scored a pair of goals in the second period by Nick Poehling and Easton Brodzinski to gain a 2-0 lead before BSU replied in the 3rd period with two goals to tie the game.
FIT TO BE TIED: In case you were wondering, the last time SCSU registered back-to-back ties during a weekend series prior to the two deadlocks at BSU, it was Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 2018 with a 4-4 and 2-2 weekend at Miami.
A BUSY NIGHT: Junior goalie David Hrenak, a draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings, posted 39 saves in the Huskies' 2-2 tie at BSU. This marked the most saves in a game for Hrenak since he charted 40 saves in a 5-0 win at Omaha on Dec. 2, 2017. The 41 shots on goal by BSU was also the most shots on goal in a game by a SCSU opponent since a game at Princeton with 42 shots on target on Dec. 30, 2017.
FIRST GOAL: Senior team alternate captain Clark Kuster posted his first collegiate goal with his SHG vs. BSU on Oct. 11. In his career, Kuster has 1g/1a in 15 games played
AHCAN NOTES:Jack Ahcan currently ranks fifth in the team record for most career assists by a defenseman with 64. He also has 79 career points, which places him ninth on the Huskies' career scoring list for defensemen. He is two ahead of former SCSU standout and longtime NHL player Bret Hedican, who had 77 points during his career at SCSU. Ahcan scored his 15th career goal and first SHG vs. BSU on Oct. 11.
ALUMNI UPDATE: Former SCSU defender Kevin Gravel recently returned to the NHL after being recalled from the AHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs last week...in addition, former Husky Jonny Brodzinski was also called back up to the NHL by the San Jose Sharks last week. Other former Huskies currently playing in the NHL this season include Blake Lizotte with the Los Angles Kings, Nic Dowd and Nick Jensen with the Washington Capitals, Dennis Cholowski with the Detroit Red Wings and Patrick Russell with the Edmonton Oilers.
DID YOU KNOW: SCSU is 22-4-4 in the all-time series against Bemidji State, and the Huskies are 3-0-2 in the last five meetings against BSU and 6-1-3 in the last 10 meetings against BSU...Sam Hentges and Jack Poehling pace the Huskies in 2019-20 with three points apiece, while Jack Poehling leads the team with three assists...in the first two games of the season, David Hrenak tallied a combined total of 68 saves...rookies making their SCSU collegiate hockey debuts at BSU included Chase Brand, Jami Krannila, Zach Okabe, Kyler Kupka and Thomas Rocco.
NORTHEASTERN NOTEBOOK: This weekend will mark the start of a four-game homestand for the SCSU Huskies. On Nov. 1-2, SCSU will host east coast rival Princeton at the HBNHC. In action against, the Northeastern Huskies, the SCSU Huskies are tied in the all-time series 1-1-0. Last year, SCSU lost a 3-2 game at Northeastern in Boston. The SCSU-Northeastern series started with a 4-1 victory for SCSU on Nov. 24, 2000...in the game against Northeastern last year, Jack Ahcan scored a goal with assists from Nick Perbix and Easton Brodzinski. The loss capped a weekend trip to Boston for the Huskies, which opened with a 7-0 win at Boston College...Northeastern is the lone Hockey East opponent on the SCSU schedule in 2019-20...last year, Northeastern was 27-11-1, 15-8-1 HE and lost in the first round of the NCAA East Regional by a 5-1 score against Cornell. Northeastern is 3-0-1, 1-0-0 HE this year.

OPPONENT NOTES: This will mark the third and fourth times that SCSU and Northeastern will play games. The first time the two teams played at Matthews Arena was a 4-1 win for the SCSU Huskies on Nov. 24, 2000 and last year, SCSU lost a 3-2 game at Northeastern on Noct. 27, 2018...Matthews Arena is both the oldest arena still in use for hockey and the oldest multi-purpose athletic building still in use in the world. It is the original home of the National Hockey League (NHL) Boston Bruins — the only team of the NHL's Original Six whose original home arena still exists for the sport of ice hockey at any level of competition — and the WHA New England Whalers (now the NHL Carolina Hurricanes), as well as the secondary home of the NBA Boston Celtics. The NHL's first US-based franchise, the Boston Bruins, played their first-ever NHL regular season game at the Arena on Monday, December 1, 1924. The Boston Celtics played their first game at the Arena in 1946, and played at the Arena until 1955. The WHA's New England Whalers played some of their first-season home games at the Arena in 1972-73...Northeastern is currently ranked #11 and opened their year with a 2-1, 2-1 sweep of Union on Oct. 11-12. Last week, Northeastern posted a 3-1 win over UMass and tied Holy Cross 2-2...Jordan Harris leads Northeastern with 2g/2a and four points, while Zach Solow has 1g/3a for four points...Craig Pantano leads NE in the nets with a 3-0-1 record and a 1.23 GAA (.949 save rate).
