Huskies Fall to Mavericks in One Goal Game

St. Cloud State Women's Hockey faced off against Minnesota State for game one of the weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies came out strong and hungry for points as they outshot the Mavericks 30 to 26. The first period brought quality scoring opportunities to both teams as the Huskies and Mavericks had two powerplay chances apiece. The Mavericks capitalized on their second powerplay when Brittyn Fleming scored at 16:53 in the first period. Emma Polusny stopped 7 shots for the Huskies in the first period as the team put 9 SOG.
The scoreless second period came with the Huskies pouring 16 more shots on Mavericks' goaltender Abigail Levy. The Huskies came out hungry for a goal and were given a third chance on the powerplay, but struggled to get the puck behind Levy. The Mavericks had 11 shots on goal in the second, giving Polusny 11 more saves for the Huskies.
The third period of the game was also scoreless. Emma Polsusny stopped 7 shots for the Huskies for a game total of 25 saves.
"We learned we have to play a complete game in this league. We can't take a period off. After a slow start, it's hard to come back. Looking at tomorrow, we need a better start, and we need to clean up defensively and on our special teams. We definitely created enough opportunities today, we just need to capitalize," said Head Coach Steve Macdonald after the 1-0 loss to Minnesota State.
The Huskies and the Mavericks face off for game two tomorrow, October 26 at 2:07 pm at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. There is also a Skate with the Huskies event following the men's game. Fans will have a chance to hit the ice at the HBNHC along with members of the SCSU men's and women's hockey teams, and the event is free and open to the public. Skate with the Huskies begins immediately after the conclusion of the SCSU men's game that night and fans are encouraged to bring their skates to the game that night (or get a pair from the HBNHC pro shop).
