
St. Cloud State Uses Timely Shooting and Stellar Defense to Beat Michigan Tech

MOORHEAD, MINN. – St. Cloud State University overcame a slow start to defeat Michigan Tech University 65-61. After downing MTU, the Huskies move to 2-0 (0-0 NSIC) on the season. Michigan Tech falls to 1-2 (0-0 GLIAC) after tonight's loss.
St. Cloud State shot 20-of-48 from the floor for 41 percent as a team. The Huskies knocked down some big shots from beyond the arch, as a team SCSU shot 6-of-17 for 35.3 percent. St. Cloud State struggled to find consistency at the charity stripe only shooting 19-of-29 for 65 percent.
On the other hand, Michigan Tech shot 29-of-53 for 39 percent from the field. MTU hit 9-of-27 three-pointers for a team percentage of 33.3. Michigan tech only went to the foul line 10 times tonight and made six of those attempts.
While St. Cloud State won the battle on the boards 42-27, MTU won the turnover battle with 16 compared to SCSU's 22 on the night.
For offense, SCSU relied on Tori Wortz (Jr., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) for steady buckets when the offense needed some kind of spark. Wortz had 18 points on the night on 5-of-15 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Nikki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eau Claire, Wis.) added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. Kelsey Peschel (So., G, Sauk Centre, Minn.) provided a major spark off the bench with a career high 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown.
Michigan Tech's offense was led by Sloane Zenner, who had 12 points, three rebounds, and one assist. Cassidy Trotter, Ellie Welsh, and Ellie Mackay all had 10 points on the night as well for MTU.
Michigan Tech got the scoring started for both sides with a three pointer. A few possessions later, Wortz went to the line and knocked down both free throws to make the score 3-2. MTU led for majority of the first quarter, at one point they led SCSU by six points. A three-pointer from Peschel cut the Huskies deficit to one to make the score 13-12 with just over two minutes left. Brehna Evans (So., G, De Pere, Wis.) then made another jumper to give St. Cloud State their first lead of the night. The Huskies took their 14-13 lead into the second quarter.

SCSU's defense showed up big in the second quarter, and continued to make the Michigan Tech offense uncomfortable. After a media timeout, St. Cloud State went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 26-19 with a little over three minutes left in the first half. The Huskies took a 26-22 lead into the third quarter.
Coming out of the half, the Huskies jumped out to a 30-24 lead. MTU stayed in the game by chipping away with three-pointers. After gaining momentum, Michigan Tech cut into the St. Cloud State lead with a layup to make the score 32-30. After Wortz extended the Huskies lead to 35-30, MTU responded with a three-pointer to make the score 35-33. Michigan Tech regained the lead on a three-pointer but the Peschel came down and matched it with a three of her own to make the score 38-36 Huskies. Madelin Damann (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) then drained a three-pointer to make the score 41-36. The Huskies 8-2 run to end the third quarter gave them a 44-38 lead.
Evans and Wortz combined for five points to make the score 47-40 early in the fourth quarter. Michigan Tech responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 47. With over seven minutes of play left, MTU picked up five team fouls. Peschel knocked down a big three-pointer to give the Huskies a 52-47 lead. With 2:21 left in the fourth quarter SCSU led 57-53. With 1:04 remaining the Huskies jumped out to their biggest lead of the night to make the score 61-53. MTU scored a three-pointer to make deficit five points. MTU knocked down three free throws late to make the score 63-61 with 13 seconds left. Peschel was fouled and hit both free throws to ice the game. St. Cloud State won 65-61 over Michigan Tech.
