St. Cloud, Minnesota --- St. Cloud State Women's hockey faced off against No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers for game one of the weekend series at the Herb
Brooks National Hockey Center. After a slow start by the Huskies, Wisconsin poured 16 shots on Huskies' goaltender Emma Polusny in the first period. Polusny came up with 14 saves as the Badgers had an early two-goal lead.
In the second period, Wisconsin scored a third goal to widen the lead even more, but the Huskies responded quickly. The Huskies came alive as Mckenna Wesloh notched her second career goal to put the Huskies on the board at 9:28 into the period. Wesloh was assisted by Courtney Hall and Rachel Herzog. With under a minute and a half left in the second, senior forward Hallie Theososopolous scored a second goal for the Huskies to cut the lead down to just one goal. Theodosopoulos was assisted by Taylor Lind and Laura Kluge.
The third period began with a quick goal by the Badgers at 1:40 in. However, Hallie Theodosopoulos scored her second goal of the game to close the gap again at 8:05 into the third period. The Huskies battled hard and gave the Badgers a good fight, but couldn't quite get any more pucks past Badgers' goaltender Kristen Campbell. With a few minutes left, the Huskies pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but the Badgers were able to notch an empty net goal.
The Huskies had 14 shots on goal, while the Badgers had 32. Junior goaltender Emma Polusny made 27 saves for the Huskies.
"I thought we started out well. There were a few times we got away from our game, and the Badgers definitely took advantage of that. I felt that we came back in 2nd, and we did the little things right. Our girls had really good energy, and we are very proud. We are confident that we can do that again and hope we can replicate that for tomorrow," said Head Coach Steve Macdonald after tonight's game.
The two teams face off for game two of the weekend at 3:07pm tomorrow back at the Herb Brooks NHC.
