Huskies Fall At the Buzzer: Late Push Not Enough to Overcome Slow Start
11/23/2019 1:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MARQUETTE, MI. – St. Cloud State University dropped a close one on the road to Northern Michigan University. The huskies fell 55-53 as MNU's Erin Honkala made a layup with the clock winding down to make sure SCSU did not send the game to overtime. The Huskies suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1 (0-0 NSIC) as the Wildcats improve to 2-3 (0-0 GLIAC).
A slow start plagued the Huskies, after falling behind 20-11 going into the second quarter, St. Cloud State was forced to play behind the rest of the game. The Huskies picked up their play and came back after being down by 15 to make the score 38-30 going into halftime. The Huskies struggled to shoot the ball all day, just two SCSU players tallied double digit points in a game that had defense written all over it.
The Huskies also lost the battle on the boards and were outrebounded for the first time all season. The Wildcats grabbed 40 rebounds while the Huskies only hauled in 20 total rebounds. Northern Michigan also had 15 second chance points which helped keep them in front majority of the game.
As a team, the Huskies shot 22-of-64 for 34.4 percent from the field and 7-of-20 for 35 percent from downtown. SCSU did not go to the line much as they only attempted four total free throws as a team. The Huskies only made 2-of-4 free throws for 50 percent from the charity stripe.
Northern Michigan shot 21-of-48 from the field for 43.8 percent as a team. The Wildcats struggled from beyond the arc, only shooting 4-of-17 for 23.5 percent. At the free throw line, the wildcats were nearly perfect as they shot 9-of-10 for 90 percent.
St. Cloud State just struggled to find a rhythm even though the Huskies took more shot attempts on the day. Despite the Huskies struggling offense, Madelin Dammann (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) had a career day as she was the Huskies biggest scoring threat on the day. Dammann scored 27 points to match a career high on 11-of-20 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from deep. Nikki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eau Claire, Wis.) was the only other Husky with double digit points tallying 10 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Kilboten also added two rebounds and three assists. Caitlyn Peterson (Jr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) added seven points off the bench on 2-of-5 shooting and had the only two makes at the free throw line for the Huskies.
The Wildcats were led by Jessica Schultz with 16 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. Schultz also added seven rebounds on the day. Makaylee Kuhn added eight points on 5-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe. The rest of the Wildcats split scoring duties with four players tallying six points.
The Huskies almost forced overtime but the ball just did not bounce their way. SCSU came out of halftime and made the necessary adjustments to outscore Northern Michigan 23-17 in the second half. St. Cloud State will open conference play next Saturday, November 30, at 2 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.
