Huskies battle to 3-3 OT decision at #16 Northern Michigan

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-2-4, 0-0-0 NCHC) battled to a 3-3 overtime decision at #16 Northern Michigan University (6-1-2, 4-0-0 WCHA) in Marquette, Mich. on Friday, Nov. 8.
The Huskies and Wildcats battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw after the first period of play before St. Cloud State scored first in the contest with a goal by Nick Poehling at 5:36 of the second period with an assist from Jack Ahcan. The goal was Nick Poehling's second of the new season.
St. Cloud State extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Will Hammer at 8:32 of the second period with assists from Jake Wahlin and Thomas Rocco. This was Hammer's first collegiate goal and first point at SCSU. Wahlin marked his first assist of the season on the play and it was Rocco's second helper of 2019-20 at SCSU.
The Huskies extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal at 18:56 by Jack Poehling. He was assisted by Sam Hentges on the play, which marked the seventh consecutive game that Hentges has scored a point in 2019-20. He currently has five goals and seven assists to lead SCSU with 12 points in 2019-20. The goal was Jack Poehling's second of 2019-20.
In the third period, SCSU's shutout was ended with a trio of goal on a rare double major penalty that provide NMU with almost 5:00 of 5x3 power play time. The Wildcats took advantage early in the power play with a goal by Vincent de Mey at 11:32. NMU then made it 3-2 with a goal by Andre Ghantous at 13:08.
The OT period was then forced by a NMU's third goal on the power play at 14:34 of the third by Ghantous.
Both clubs finished regulation without another goal and the Huskies managed to outshoot NMU by a 2-1 margin in the OT session but neither team was able to break the tie.
In the nets, David Hrenak made 22 saves for the Huskies to earn his fourth tie of the season. John Hawthorne had 21 saves in the game for NMU. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-4 and NMU was 3-of-5.
