Goal by Perbix lifts Huskies to a 5-4 in OT at #16 Northern Michigan

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (2-2-4, 0-0-0 NCHC) used a goal in OT by sophomore defender Nick Perbix to gain a big 5-4 win at #16 Northern Michigan University (6-2-2, 4-0-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Marquette, Mich.
The win snapped a three game winless streak for the Huskies and it broke an eight game undefeated streak for nationally ranked Northern Michigan. Of note, SCSU has now played in five OT games this season and the Huskies are 1-0-4 in those five games.
SCSU opened the game's scoring at 3:19 of the opening period with a goal by San Hentges, which was assisted by Spencer Meier and Jack Ahcan.
This was Hentges' sixth goal of the season and his 16th career goal in two season with the Huskies.
The Huskies' stretched their lead to 2-0 at 5:19 of the first period with a power play goal by Meier, which is his second goal of the 2019-20 campaign. Hentges and Ahcan both added assists on the play for the Huskies.
To finish the first period, SCSU's Easton Brodzinski scored an unassisted goal at 16:29 of the first to make the tally 3-0.
In the second period, NMU broke the shutout with a goal by Andre Ghantous at 5:55 to make it 3-1. The Huskies quickly halted the Wildcats' rally with another goal by Brodzinski at 9:30 of the second period with helpers from Jack Poehling and Hentges.
This was Brodzinski's fourth goal of the season and it pushed Hentges' early season totals to an impressive six goals, nine assists and 15 points after only eight games played in 2019-20.
In the third period, NMU got back into the mix with a goal by Luke Voltin at 9:31 and then made it 4-3 with a marker by Griffin Loughran at 10:42 of the third.
A goal by NMU's Ty Readman at 11:22 of the third period then made it 4-4, which forced yet another OT session for the Huskies (their fifth of the season).
In the extra period, SCSU brought home the victory with a goal by Nick Perbix at 3:53 of OT. Kevin Fitzgerald and Micah Miller each had assists on the play, which was Perbix' second goal of the season.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Wildcats 32-22. David Hrenak had 18 saves in the game and gained his second victory of 2019-20. On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-6 and NMU was 1-of-2.
The Huskies will continue their 2019-20 campaign on Nov. 15-16 with a pair of games against Colorado College at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. These games will mark the start of the Huskies' NCHC schedule for 2019-20. Of note, SCSU is the two-time defending NCHC regular season champions with league titles won in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
