Men's basketball falls in NSIC opener 95-74

DULUTH, MINN. – After several weather delays, the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team was finally able to open the 2019-20 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season on Monday, December 2. Though St. Cloud State battled, the team fell in its conference opener to the University of Minnesota-Duluth 95-74 in Duluth, Minnesota.
The Huskies trailed 46-41 at the half after a furious rally in the final 10 minutes helped them pull within five. St. Cloud State fell behind 16-4 in the opening minutes of play and managed to cut the deficit to five thanks to strong first halves from Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and llya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49). The two newcomers combined for 18 points, while senior guard Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston) added eighth despite missing most of the half due to foul trouble.
The Bulldogs proved to be too much in the second half, as they ran away with the 95-74 win over the Huskies. Marshall led the way with 23 points while Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) and Roberts both scored in double-digits, tallying 13 and 12 points respectively.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's overall record is now 3-4 and the team opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season with a 0-1 record. The Huskies will return to the court on Friday, December 6 when they host the University of Mary at 7:30 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
