ST. CLOUD, MINN. – In St. Cloud State University men's basketball history, only five coaches could ever boast membership in the 100 wins club.
As of Friday night, that exclusive club now has six members. Thanks to a resounding 88-56 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over the University of Mary on Friday evening, Huskies head men's basketball coach Matt Reimer joined the 100 wins club, improving his career record to 100-64 in six seasons with St. Cloud State.
It was all Huskies all the time early in the game, as they jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the opening six minutes despite the Marauders scoring five unanswered points to open the game. It was the usual suspect, Andrija Blatancic (Bergen, Norway / Academy of Arts) who opened the scoring for St. Cloud State, scoring the team's first basketball at 16:58 to cut the Mary lead to 5-2. Jake Mussman (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) then tied things up with a corner three, and that was all the Huskies needed to jump start their offense and score 12 unanswered points.
The Marauders did manage to whittle the lead down to a manageable four points, as Trever Kaiser came up with a three-pointer to make it 12-8 with 13:39 remaining in the first half. That was as close as Mary would ever come to catching St. Cloud State, as the team entered the locker room at halftime with a sizeable, and quite comfortable, 39-21 lead.
The good times continued to roll for the Huskies in the second have, as they continued to dominate in every facet of the game. Still, it looked like the Marauders had potential to make things interesting, as they seven of nine points to seemingly cut into St. Cloud State's lead at 54-39. There truly was no threat, as the Huskies scoring barrage pushed the lead to 20 points, then 22, 26, 28 and eventually 32 at the final buzzer with the final score reading 88-56 in favor of St. Cloud State.
Transfer junior Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) led the Huskies in scoring, as he tallied a St. Cloud State career-high 20 points in the victory on 7-11 shooting from the floor and a 5-7 mark from three-point range, and also added a team-leading seven rebounds in the victory. Blatancic ended his night with 19 points, while Illinoisans Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) and Ethan Schuemer (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook) both scored in double-digits, tallying 11 and 10 points for St. Cloud State respectively.
With the win, the Huskies overall record improves to 4-4 and they are now 1-1 in NSIC play. More impressively, Reimer becomes just the sixth coach in program history to collect 100 wins in his career, as his all-time coaching record now stands at 100-64. The coach and players will look to add win 101 to his resume, as St. Cloud State hosts Minot State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 in Halenbeck Hall.
