ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team is used to playing close, tight games this season. In fact, the Huskies have played in three different games determined by six points or less, including Saturday evening's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contest against Minot State University. Fortunately, St. Cloud State prevailed against its NSIC North rival, downing Minot State 78-73 thanks to a career day from Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston).
Marshall led the Huskies in scoring from start to finish, as he concluded the game with a career-high 31 points, accounting for nearly 40 percent of St. Cloud State's defense. However, the Huskies had some ground to make up in the opening half of play, as they trailed 16-10 at the 12:22 media time out. St. Cloud State rallied and eventually tied this at 16 all with a two-point field goal from Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy). Neither team, though, scored for a full two minutes and 23 seconds, allowing Minot State to eventually take a 18-16 lead.
That 18-16 lead was the last the Beavers would hold in regulation, as the Huskies would score nine of 11 points to hold a 25-22 lead over their opponent. The three-point lead was the biggest St. Cloud State would hold over Minot State in the opening half, as the team walked into the locker room holding a slim 31-28 lead thanks to a last second layup from Marshall.
It was the second half where the Huskies offense really came to life, as they jumped out to a 40-34 lead after a steal-and-dunk from first year Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park). St. Cloud State never could lose the Beavers, though, as they scored four unanswered points of their own to cut the lead back to 45-43. Marshall and Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) never allowed Minot State to come within three of the Huskies lead, as their timely baskets allowed St. Cloud State to hold a 69-60 advantage with 4:10 remaining in regulation.
In the end, it was free throws that proved to be St. Cloud State's savior, as the team was clutch down the stretch to secure its victory. In fact, in the final 45 second of play, the Huskies made five of seven free throws, including two from Jailen Moore (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) in the final 10 seconds to secure the 78-73 win for St. Cloud State.
Marshall had a huge day for the Huskies, as he scored a career-high 31 points in 37 minutes of play on 11-19 shooting from the floor, including a 2-4 mark from beyond the arc. Tyrtyshnik added 17 points in the victory, while Roberts was the final Husky in double-digits with 11 points against the Beavers.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 5-4 and the team in 2-1 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to the court on Friday, December 13 when they face Southwest Minnesota State at 7:30 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
