ST. CLOUD, MINN. – With 2019 winding to an end, the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team is looking to start 2020 in the best way possible: with two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) wins. After a two week hiatus, the Huskies will return to action this upcoming weekend, as they host the University of Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State University Friday and Saturday in Halenbeck Hall.
St. Cloud State is set to tip off against Minnesota-Crookston at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 3 before hosting Bemidji State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The three teams currently rank in the top-6 in the NSIC North Standings, with the Huskies and Beavers deadlocked in a three-way tie for second place at 4-2.
Live stats, video and a live radio broadcast will be available for fans who cannot make the trek to Halenbeck Hall, and score updates will be made on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball) throughout the game.
Here are the five things to know before the Huskies first games of 2020:
4 – Bemidji State is one of the biggest "surprises" of 2019-20, as the Beavers have made the leap from one of the worst teams in the NSIC to one of the best. After going 6-16 in conference play in 2018-19, Bemidji State is currently 4-2 and riding a four-game win streak thanks to victories over MSU-Moorhead, Wayne State, Augustana and Minnesota-Crookston. In fact, the Beavers have not lost a contest since December 6, 2019, when they fell to Northern State 81-73.
3-1 – Last season, the Huskies posted a 3-1 record against their NSIC North foes, as the Golden Eagles handed them one of their more shocking losses of the 2018-19 season. In its first game back after the holiday break, St. Cloud State fell to Minnesota-Crookston 76-57 on the road before rebounding with a thrilling 107-101 double overtime win over Bemidji State the very next day. The Huskies, though, dominated when they hosted both teams in the final games of the regular season, as they routed the Golden Eagles 90-74 after taking down the Beavers 85-58.
1 – This season, Bemidji State's roster holds just one player that ranks in the top-10 in overall scoring. Nick Wagner is currently averaging 18.2 points per game for the Beavers this season, which ranks seventh overall in the NSIC. However, in games against conference opponents, Wagner ranks 16th in the conference in points per game, as he averages 15.7 points against NSIC opponents. Despite only having one player rank in the top-20 in scoring, Bemidji State ranks fifth as a team in scoring offensive, averaging 79.0 points against NSIC opponents.
30.3/32.2 – While the Beavers' roster holds just one of the conference's top-scorers, the Golden Eagles boast the top scorer in the NSIC, as senior guard Harrison Cleary is averaging 30.3 points a game this season. The senior is even better against conference opponents, as he leads the NSIC by a significant margin by averaging an impressive 32.2 points against conference foes. Entering Saturday's game, Cleary is shooting .438 from the floor, .464 from the three-point line and .930 from the free throw line, qualifying him as one of the top shooters in the NSIC.
102 – While Cleary was expected to be Minnesota-Crookston's offensive juggernaut this season, St. Cloud State's top offensive weapon is no slouch. Over the last four games, senior guard Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) has scored 102 points and averaged 25.5 points per game, making him one of the most efficient players in the conference during that time span. Since opening conference play on December 2, Marshall has shot above .500 in all but one of the Huskies contests and scored 20+ points in five of six games. Marshall is additionally averaging 4.5 assists/game against conference opponents this season and ranks in the top-10 in points/game, assists/game and field goal percentage.
