Group Effort Helps the Huskies Handily Take Down the Beavers

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team came out hot offensively in tonight's game against the Minot State University Beavers. An evenly distributed offensive performance for the Huskies was key in tonight's 80-56 victory over the Beavers, with four Huskies scoring in the double digits. After tonight's game, SCSU improves to 4-3 (1-2 NISC) and earns their first NSIC win of the young season. Minot falls to 3-4 (0-3 NSIC) after dropping tonight's game.
SCSU was led offensively by Brehna Evans (So., G, De Pere, Wis.). Evans scored15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Evans also added five rebounds, six assists, and three steals on the night. Madelin Damman (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) also had a big day, adding 13 points to the Husky win, shooting 5-of-11. Damman also drained both of her free throw attempts and tallied six total rebounds.
Right behind Damman, Nikki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eau Claire, Wis.) and Katrina Theis (So., F, Maple Grove, Minn.) each contributed 12 points to tonight's Husky win. Kilboten shot 5-of-12 and knocked down two free throws. Kilboten led the Huskies in rebounds and was one board shy of a double-double. Theis shot 4-of-8 from the field while making 4-of-5 free throws. Theis also added five rebounds and three steals.
Caitlyn Peterson (Jr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) provided a spark for the Huskies coming off the bench and adding seven points. Peterson grabbed four offensive boards to help St. Cloud State score second chance points, she also added one block on the night.
As a team, SCSU shot 29-of-63 for 46 percent from the field. The Huskies also shot 39.3 percent from downtown on 11-of-28 shooting. SCSU stepped up at the charity stripe tonight as they shot 11-of-15 for 73.3 percent.
Minot State shot 21-of-56 for 37.5 percent from the field on the night. The Beavers couldn't find success offensively from behind the arc. They took 12 attempts but were only able to knock down one three- pointer. The Beavers shot 72.2 percent from the free throw line, knocking down 13-of-18 attempts.
Leading the Beavers offensively was Mariah Payne who had 22 points and 6 rebounds. Payne shot 50 percent from the field and made 5-of-8 free throws. Callie Delsman added 9 points for the Beavers on 3-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
The Huskies offense began to jump ahead on a three-point shot by Kelsey Peschel (So., G, Sauk Centre, Minn.) with 1:28 left in the first half. The Beavers trailed closely for a while in the second half until eventually, Theis was fouled on a layup and knocked down her free throw to convert the and-one and put the Huskies up 39-26 with 1:37 left in the half.
Coming out in the second half, the Huskies continued to gain ground with a steady performance in the paint and at the line. By the middle of the third quarter, the Huskies were up by 17 with 50 points. The huskies continued to separate themselves offensively in the fourth quarter with more shots in the paint and a few key three-pointers. After a few scoreless possessions halfway into the fourth quarter, a layup from Kassidy Steen (Sr., F, Cloquet, Minn.) put the Huskies at 74-48. Late in the fourth quarter, Mariah Alipate (R-Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) knocked down two three-pointers to make the final score 80-56.
The Huskies will be back on the road next weekend Fri., December 13 to take on Southwest Minnesota State University at 5:30pm. After that game the Huskies will trek to South Dakota to take on Sioux Falls Sat., December 14 at 3:30 p.m.
