ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team has tallied quite a few dominating wins this season. On Friday, the Huskies opened the final month of the season with perhaps their most dominant yet in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, as they upended the Upper Iowa University Peacocks 69-56.
The Huskies took a definitive 23-8 lead after the first quarter thanks to hot shooting from five separate players. Madelin Dammann (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) and Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) led the way for St. Cloud State in the first quarter with six points a piece, while Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) and Caitlyn Peterson (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) each added four. Where the Huskies were completely dominant, though, was on the boards, as they tallied 17 total in the first 10 minutes of the game compared to the Peacocks six.
Upper Iowa made a bit of a run at St. Cloud State's lead late in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 35-21 with one minute remaining before the half. Wortz and Dammann, though, ensured the Huskies would hold at least an 18 point advantage at the half, as they made two baskets with under 30 seconds to secure a 39-21 halftime lead for St. Cloud State.
The Huskies dominance continued in the third and fourth quarters, as they outscored the Peacocks 14-9 in the third quarter alone. Mallie Doucette (Colfax, Wis. / Colfax) was offensively on fire in the second half for St. Cloud State, as she scored 10 points in the third quarter alone to help the Huskies hold a 53-30 lead heading into the final quarter.
St. Cloud State continued to pour on the points in the fourth and final quarter, eventually beating Upper Iowa by a final score of 69-56. In total, the Huskies scored an average of 17.25 points per quarter in the game while shooting over 50 percent from the floor in the first half. On the flip side, St. Cloud State's stingy defense held the Peacocks to .356 shooting in the game and a season-low eight points in the first quarter. In fact, only one player for Upper Iowa scored in double digits and no players tallied double digit rebounds.
Doucette ended the game as the team's leading scorer, tallying 23 point son 7-10 shooting, including a 5-7 mark from three point range. Kilboten was the team's top rebounder as she pulled in 10 boards, while Dammann closed the game with a season and career-high seven boards for the Huskeis.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 12-7 and the team is now 9-6 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, February 2 when they host Winona State University at 3:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
